Simon's Wart

A Shetland Reel. This version is based on Curlew’s recording on their album “Music from Shetland and Beyond”, which dates from the mid 1980s, which is here:

http://www.thesession.org/recordings/display/2432

My LP sleeve for that album contains no more information about the tune. I thought it was a great name for a tune and, for a long time (pre-internet), I thought Simon might not have been delighted to have such tune written about him.

I now know it is apparently on the first Ossian album, though I’ve never heard that version. The information I have comes from internet notes about that record. It was written by Willie Hunter, Senior. It is “named after a stone built look-out station or 'wart', this particular one - Simon's Wart, or Seoman's as it is pronounced, being in the parish of Nesting.”

Here's Ossian's version:

They pair it up with the well-known Spootaskerry and The Willan Kishie, recently recorded by Bryan Gear.

Thanks, Jürgen. That's really interesting. I have a poor recording of Willie Hunter, Junior, playing the tune and I'll maybe try and post that version some time. I think he plays low Gs in the first half just like Ossian.

This tune is also now to be found on the newly-released Fiddlers' Bid CD "All Dressed in Yellow".

I've edited the ABC slightly as I think the Curlew version is different at second half, third bar. So I've changed |"C"EFGE "G"DEGA| to |"C"EFGA "G"BABG|
