A third tune by the (or at least one) name, Munster Buttermilk

I first came across this tune on Mick O'Brien's and Caoimhin O Raghallaigh's "Kitty Lie Over". Their pairing of it with Kitty Lie Over could have been a bit of a damp squib, the tunes are quite closely related after all. But subtle changes are often just as satisfying as big bang changes ... especially when played by people with Mick's and Caoimhin's sensitivity. My ears pricked up when Max, a regular whistle player in our local sessions, became hooked on the set. For a time I've played along with Max on Kitty, but sat Munster Buttermilk out. However gradually I've found my way into the tune. This is the way I've got it, at any rate.

Duplication?

Isn't this one already on the session db?

Sorry!

Sorry - just looked at the abc and can see that it's a different tune!

Munster Buttermilk in G vs this tune

Mix...

I played the G version through and while they're close, this particular tune has a very different feel ...

Hence I decided that it deserved an entry of its own. But am open to persuasion otherwise.

Cheers.

quite similar to the version of behind the haystack in o'neill's

I mean this one is not a jig, but a slide - am I wrong????

Jig/Slide?

Hmmm... when is a slide not a slide? I listed this as a jig because I first came across it played as a jig (by MO'B and COR, as noted above). However, I wouldn't die with my back to the wall to defend myself on this one.

Interestingly, on the same album from which I got this tune, the lads play "Biddy From Sligo" in a jig set. I gave it a rattle one night in a local session and was taken to one side by one of the regulars who said he would have joined in but he was rattled, cos he#d only ever heard the tune played as a slide. He then proceeded to play it as a slide and it was grand. But it's good as a jig as well.

The Old Favourite ... there's another tune thpat commonly crops up as either a jig or a slide. Rathawaun ... there's another ...

Depends on the context, I suppose.

Whirlwind

Paddy Glackin plays this as one of the solo pieces on The Whirlwind album (duets with Robbie Hannan). While flat for most of the album to match the pipes, he's tuned up to concert pitch for this set.

He follows it with Sweet Biddy Daly in A, which really keeps the energy rolling.

Munster Buttermilk

This tune appears as a 5-parter in the Fermanagh Gunn Manuscrpit, under the title 'Ladies, Squeeze your Thighs' (!!)
