John Egan
I'm posting 2 reels and a polka by John Egan, from the current issue of Treoir (aug 2002). Here's what it says there about the author:
The legendary flute player John Egan (1903-1989) was born in Ardleybeg, Ballingtogher, Co. Sligo. John learned a lot of his music from local musicians such as Andy & James Doyle (father and son), flute players from Lackagh, Drumfin, which was also the birthplace of the great fiddler, James Morrison. He also met and played with two other great flute players, Brian Luby and John Joe Gardiner, of Corhubber, Ballymote. He also learned to play the fiddle.
He left home in his early twenties to work in Donegal and later in London. He returned to Dublin in 1937 where he worked as a barman. Over the years he met and played with many of the musicians from rural Ireland who lived and worked in Dublin. For some years he was a member of the famous Kincora Ceili Band which was founded by Kathleen Harrington, from Corhubber.
In 1952 John and other musical friends established St Mary's Traditional Music Club in Church Street. It became popularly known among traditional musicians and followers as the Church Street Club. Music sessions were held there every Wednesday night, for many years until John's death on the 10th January, 1989.

Ach! One tune a day!
Well, we're only allowed 1 tune a day now... so watch this space for John Egan's reel #2 and John Egan's Polka (different from the other John Egan's Polka already posted).

John Egan's Reel 1
I like the mixolydian sound of this one.
It's pretty obvious but let me say it anyway, don't be fooled by the repeat signs; this is a single reel.

The ending
Thanks, Jeremy, for fixing the repeats on part B. I think the "2" part of the second repeat is a variation meant for playing when you're done with the tune. It's just a slight variation of the "1", without the e and d notes that lead back into part A. That's why i wrote it down the way i had it:
|: cdef g3 e | a2 af g2 ed | cdef g2 fg | afge dfed :| afge d2
It probably should be a d4 at the end, but we "stole" the last beat of this measure to use as the start of the tune... Hard to notate these things.

Not the one in Moneymusk
The John Egan's that appears in the Moneymusk album is another tune (a hornpipe).

This reel is played on the eighth track of "Within a Mile of Dublin" by Paul McGrattan and Paul Shaughnessy.

Moneymusk
The link from the "John Egan's" on Hammy Hamilton's "Moneymusk" sends you to this page, but the tune he plays is a hornpipe, so here's the link to the tune he plays: http://thesession.org/tunes/display/2444.

Rogha Thomais Ui Dubhda
This tune is on Angelina Carberry's album "An Tradisiun Beo" under that name. She says her source for it was a volume of Ceol Rince na hEireann.

No, this is very different from "Rogha Thomais Ui Dubhda" or "Tom Dow's Favourtie." It's already here: http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/3224 Paddy, you have to ask Gian Marco to delete the wrong alternative title.
