Patsy Geary's
A fiddle player in our session, Rachelle, got this tune from Willie Kelly, who called it Patsy Geary's, and told Rachelle it was in a book he had. I have googled the ABC's in every possible search engine, including the newest one and can't find any reference to this tune. It is obviously not the Patsy Geary's (Yellow Rose of Texas) that the Bothy Band played. So, any ideas?

Sounds more like just plain G to me--that's where I hear it wanting to resolve to.

I agree Will. Just because it ends on a D doesn't make that necessarily the Key/Tonic. Right through it feel like it is trying to resolve to a G. Nice tune though. I feel sure I have heard it before somewhere but no clues coming through at the moment. Someone needs to stick the abc into the "Rev Counter" - I just thought that would be a great name for Rev's ABC engine. Sorry if that offends anyone's sense of lame joke humour.

That's where it took me after spending some time with it... It's familiar but I wasn't able to pin it down further...

The tone center...
sounds a bit vague to me, but to my ear it pulls more towards E than G. I'm not implying that G or D is wrong, just the way I hear it. However, I'm content to let it float about ambiguously. (I'm refering to the originally posted version; ceol's is clearly on the G side of things.)

Harmony
First part G to me

Patsy Geary's
The tune did come from Patsy Geary, through John Kelly. John didn't have a name for it. Breandan Breathnach, when including the tune from John Kell's playing in CRE1, christened it 'The Horseshoe', after Kelly's shop in Capel street. The name has stuck since.

"The Horseshoe"
Thanks Kilfarboy, there's a chance I might have a recording of John Kelly playing this I can transcribe from. If I do, I'll add it here...

52. An Crú Capaill [The Horse Shoe, i.e., the name of John Kelly's shop in Capel Street, Dublin]: Kelly had no name on this; myself that christened it. [from John Kelly, fiddle]

Nigel Gatherer's Traditional Music Pages
This is the route to the CRE pages on my website:
http://www.nigelgatherer.com/books/CRE/index.html
And, while I happily house these pages on my site, all praise, kudos and thanks should go to Paul de Grae, who translated the material from Gaelic, compiled much of the alternative names and sources, and gave me permission to publish on the web. Paul is an asset to any discussion on Irish music, and is always worth listening to. It's our loss that he apparently doesn't frequent thesession.org.

Thanks for the information on this tune. It has become a recent "favorite" at our session.

Patsy Geary's-Horseshoe
Does anybody know if this is the "Patsy Geary's" played by John Kelly on this recording?
http://www.thesession.org/recordings/display/3057
If so, it's interesting that he recorded it on fiddle and Breathnach got it from him on fiddle, since it seems so well suited for the C row of a concertina (the CRE version).

Sorry NIgel, semi-conscious... For some reason I ended up with those Opheus Web pages? It should have clicked, as I knew that usually your name showed in the address previously, curious...& forgetting to credit Paul de Grae...
Gary, sadly, I haven't access to my LPs or I'd check "Seoda Ceoil", but I think I may have it recorded by John Kelly elswhere. It would be a kick if it is on concertina. I haven't found it yet, but then I'm doing work for others at the moment...
