John Carty taught this jig to the banjo class at Swannanoa this year. This is the basic setting. There is a lot you can do with this tune.

I really like this tune and have been trying to learn it on concertina since you posted it last night. Did Carty give any background about it? I looked up Paddy Hayes and found that he's an accordion player (B/C) from Co. Wexford, but couldn't find any reference to this tune. Do you know if it's as old as it sounds? I've been playing it with c naturals throughout and prefer it that way. I wonder whether the c#s are there for fingering convenience on the box.

Paddy Hayes

Paddy Hayes - if it's the same musician - appears on one of the Comhaltas USA Tour LPs from the 1980s. He plays concertina too, and I'd heard somewhere that he plays it upside-down.
[ That's the concertina - not him ].

Rooney's Favourite

This is the tune titled "Rooney's Favourite" on Angelina Carberry and Martin Quinn's duet album. According to the notes of the recording, they learnt the tune from Brian Rooney and Paddy Hayes' duet playing on the radio.

C: Paddy Hayes

Sorry, forgot to add, this is one of Paddy Hayes' compositions and named after Brian Rooney.

Thanks, Slainte. They play a d(3ddd instead of d^cd in the B part.
And they pair it with Mike Cooney's Fancy, a Paddy O'Brien tune that they've incorrectly attributed to Paddy Fahey. That was my favorite tune all summer, so maybe I'll have to put them together, too. I had been thinking of putting it with the most recently posted C Major Fahey jig, but that's not working for me yet on the concertina.

John taught us the version I posted. He also gave us several variations...at which he is a master of producing. Angelina was also at Swannanoa and she played another variation...I think using an F# instead of an F natural in one place, but I'm not sure.

It's a great tune...and like I said...you can do a lot with it.

C natural

In the 4th line 2nd measure, the first C is sharp, the last one is natural. I made the changes. I hope the sheet music will be corrected too. Sorry about that.
