Growling Dogs
I ran across an MP3 of this fun little tune Googling "Australian sessions." (I don't live in Aus... I was just curious ;) ) I don't know much about it... whether it is an adaptation of an Celtic tune or a purely indigenous Aussie dance number. Funny thing is, it sounds an awful like an Ottawa Valley style tune. Canada and Australia having a similar heritage, perhaps it's a case of divergent evolution.
Anyway I figured it was worth transcribing and I think we'll have fun with it at our session. Hope you do too!

It reminds me of the Little Beggarman: http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/566

It sounds like a song air to me. A similar melody is used for a song "When a Man's in Love" on the Chieftains 9: Boil the Breakfast Early.

I'm sure there's a hornpipe (possibly a set dance) in the Irish tradition very similar to this.

In Oz...
a fellow session mate recently had an on line chat with an Australian fiddler and he asked him "what's the fiddle music like in Australia?"
the answer.... "Irish"
