The Jackets Green

This is a march, not a barndance
From the playing of the Liverpool Ceili Band, who play it once in C, and then play it again in D.

"The Jackets Green March" ~ also played in G Major

Nice one jakep, good to see this added. It's a great march... I'm surprised I hadn't added it previously... :-/

Barndance ~ a reasonable category for 4/4 marches

'Barndance' is a good category for it, marches coming in so many different time signatures and there being no seperate category for them here. Marches are used for dance too, dances that are in the same style as barndances / schottisches / Germans...

It has been a regular practice for a march to be played in a set where the only change is switching keys, between D & G being very common... It can go either way and can return on itself as well, for example starting by plying it in D a few times, then making the switch to G, and them back to D again ~ just one possibility...

These tunes are those I learned from the late Mick Clancy who held music classes in Manorhamilton in the 1970s/80s. Mick spent a great deal of his later years collecting tunes which he learned at sessions or heard recorded. He was especially interested in reels of which he had over a thousand noted down.

This collection is now I believe in the possession of the Coleman Heritage Centre of Irish Music in Gurteen, Co. Sligo.

"Jackets Green" ~ Fiddler's Companion, Andrew Kuntz

http://www.ibiblio.org/fiddlers/JA_JACKS.htm

JACKETS GREEN, THE. Irish, Air and March (2/4 time). G Major (Mulvihill): D Major (Miller & Perron). Standard tuning. One part. Words to the song were written by Michael Scanlon (1836-1900), who also wrote "Bold Fenian men" and "Limerick is beautiful."
***
Oh Ireland! Sad is thy lonely soul, and loud beats the winter sea,
But sadder and higher the wild waves roll from the hearts that break for thee.
Yet grief shall come to our heartless foes, and their thrones in the dust be seen,
But Irish maids love none but those who wear the jackets green.
