Liz Carroll's #1
This is the first of 2 fine un-named reels composed by Liz Carroll, and recorded by Cathal Hayden, twice. I’m not aware of them ever having been recorded by anyone else, even Liz herself. “Session” contributer Niall Kenny used to play them on flute when in an Edinburgh band called “Miro” in the 1980s.
Ged Palmer from Liverpool, one-time resident of Aberdeen. I think there were a few minor mistakes which I hope I have corrected. I’ll post the other reel in the next few days.
Both reels were transcribed years ago by fiddler and would-be flute player
Dow – you might like to check this, as it appears you have Cathal Hayden’s recording “Handed Down”, which was the source of Ged’s transcriptions.

This transcription seems pretty sound to me. On his "Handed Down recording", first time through, CH plays bar 6 of the A-part as |DG,A,G, B,EDB,| and thereafter as |DG, (3G,G,G, DG,B,D|. Bar 1 of the B-part is as you have it 1st time through, but thereafter it's the same as bar 5, and played as |EAcA eAcA|. The last turnaround of the B-part is |GEDB, CA,B,D|. Obviously there are other minor variations to the tune each time through. On his "Cathal Hayden" recording, he plays it almost the same, but with a few differences. Bar 2 of the A-part is |G,2A,G, DG,B,G,|. Bar 5 is |EAAG EAGE|. Bars 1 and 5 of the B-part are |EA (3AAA eABA|.

Sure ?
Did you listen to the track before you posted this ?

As a matter of fact I did listen to the track and
then played the Midi file of this transcription,
same tune!

Apology
Please accept my apology, "Bjcomm96" - you're quite correct. I didn't think I still had the Carroll/McGuire recording [ I did have the LP once upon a time ], but I found the track on an old cassette tape. It is, as you say, the same tune, but Cathal Hayden plays it very much in his own style, so much so that I never made the connection, which you did, and fair play to you for that. I'll correct the title to yet another "Finbarr Dwyer" tune, and remove the Liz Carroll title, as only CH seems to have recorded it with that name.

Any chance of a transcription of the Carroll/McGuire setting?

The CD is one of my all time favorites. Anyone know of any other Tommy Maguire recordings?
# Posted on July 2nd 2008 by Bjcomm96
Only one...
Not aware of him making any other recordings, I'm afraid.
.
Dow - I'll see what I can do, but bear in mind ,I'm not going to be around this board for the best part of 2 weeks. It's that time of the year again
I'll copy the recording onto mini-disc and take it with me, and if time permits...watch this space, in a fortnight.

Which Finbar Dwyer's?
There are two Finbar Dwyer's on An Traidisiun Beo by Angelina Carberry:

This tune appears to be third in the set on Track 4.
