"Sallbacher Masur" ~ yes, another Germanic number, but before you string me up ~

This is another one of those 'for someone else', but as happens, in this case for someone else I've never met and only heard tell of.

It is also for one of our members, 'SWFL Fiddler' ~

http://www.thesession.org/members/display/26702

It seems he's not the hard ass he's led us all to believe he is. In fact, he must be pretty soft as members go. It seems he has a regular in his session who plays recorder and completely ignores his suggestions to give the whistle a try. So, he doesn't rule over it with an iron fist as he would like us to believe. Concerning certain recordings I've had the pleasure and otherwise to hear, there may be more anarchy than tyranny. But, back to this recorder player. I'm also told they have bilingual signs in SW Florida, in his area of the swamp, which are German and English. This recorder playing regular in his session, or, since it isn't the tyranny I first thought it might be, 'their' session, is also German. So, this one is for the German recorder playing lady who is a regular member of this gang that SWFL Fiddler has the courtesy to support and uphold and nurture. I looked for something that wouldn't fit to uncomfortably with a session that is mostly Irish.

I hope someone enjoys it, I do, and I thought, why not share it... This one is for you SWFL, and anyone else who might take a fancy to it... 8-)

Harmony, for something like this, would most likely be taken as thirds, for example ~

A-part
~ | [B,2G2] [GB]>[Ac] [B2d2] | [B2g2] [GB]>[Ac] [B2d2] | ~ | [B,2G2] [B,2G2] :|
B-part
~ | [AF]>[AF] [A2F2] [A2F2] | [Af]>[Ge] [F2d2] [F2d2] | ~ | [F2d2] [F2d2] :|

The only printed sources I have for it give this tune in the keys of F & C Major...

8-) ~ the devil made me do it...

To make SWFL's life more challenging, it could also easily be played in harmony on a couple of whistles...

Being 'in harmony' is the trick...

Well thank you very much, Mr. C! I'm honored, and bit embarassed that you've shown through my 'tough guy' online persona. Yes, it's true, I'm a big softy. I can't stop smiling when I play, I give people big hugs when they have to leave the session and I thank them profusely for coming. I let the auld ones sing any hackneyed thing they'd like...within reason, and yes, I even love the recorder and hammered dulcimer players. Come one, come all. ;-)

Now I have to wait until I get home from work to play this sucker in Barfly!

LOL harmony! Want to know to what Mr. C is talking about? Too late! It was so bad, even the wind instruments wanted me to remove that clip from Soundlantern!

Luxembourg! ~ 8-)

I stand directed ~ the recorder player wishes that her origin be specific, she is from Luxembourg, not 'Germany'...

I don't think I know any tunes or dances that are specifically Luxembourgian? :-/ Hey swisspiper, anyone in that general vicitinity ~ do you?

# Posted on June 26th 2008 by ceolachan

Do they play music in Luxembourg?

Is there an Irish session anywhere there? Or, is it an Irish music free zone?

# Posted on June 26th 2008 by ceolachan

Discussion: They don't play music in Luxembourg do they?

c. Sallbach is in Austria, Masur in Poland , is this tune really from Luxemburg or just the recorder player?

# Posted on June 26th 2008 by swisspiper

"Sallbacher Masur "

Not Luxembourg, that's the question, this one is played and dance in Austrian, and surrounding neighborhoods... ;-)

The recorder player is Luxembourgian... :-/

# Posted on June 26th 2008 by ceolachan

It's Tirolian, see:

"Sallbacher Masur" ~ the dance (danke swisspiper)

That brought back memories. Yes, I've danced it, and we danced it not long ago, when we were in Austria last year, Spring 2007...

I've just gone through some things here and found it in here:

"Volkstanz in Salzburg" & I'll leave a decent translation to someone better able, here's the only short note on it aside from the dance description ~

"Aufgezeichnet von Ilka Peter, 1940, in Sallbach/Pinzgau; Tanzform mitgeteilt von Josef Bauer, vulgo Hinterangerbauer."

It also gives a speed for the music and dance ~
1/4 (crotchet/quarter note) = 112 beats per minute

Mr. C !
This is not Irish at all, so you we expect from you to balance this out
10 Irish tunes
or
3 tunes and 5 Holy Mary
;-)
