Conjecture says that the tune might be Scottish or American in origin (see link below). It is, nonetheless, a rousing reel. Octave and near-octave jumps in the melody = good exercise for flute and whistle players.

It's unmistakeably Scottish in character. It might, I suppose, have been composed by an early Scottish settler in America, but it does not, to my ear, have any characteristics that single it out as an 'American' tune.
