I learned this one off of L.E. McCullough's 4 CD set. I'm suprised it wasn't in the tune archives because I thought it was a fairly popular one. Oh well...Its there now!

chords to the Morning Star?
Hey Everyone,
I have been listening alot to The Orange Tree, by Grey Larsen and Paddy League. I am trying to pick up some of Paddy's DADGAD playing, which is hard at best.
Right i have been trying to figure out The Morning Star. I play it on flute, so i figured since i know the melody backing it up would be cake. Not so, i have a few chords figured out, but am far from done.
Can anyone just the basic chord structure perhaps? Paddy does some nifty bass line counter point stuff, but i would happy with the basic chords right now.

Martin Hayes' Version
Martin Hayes plays a lovely FMaj version on his first, eponymous album. I often put it together with The Star of Munster. Here's my condensation of it:

It's a fairly common practice to play a tune down a note in the East Clare tradition.

Version learnt in Willie Clancy week, 2003
And probably distorted by my frail memory. It starts in Gmaj but ends in Bmin, to my best judgment. The c near the end is definitely sharp.

Morningstar River
Always thought this was a nice name on a tune. Then I was doing a bit of work recently down around Tipperary & Limerick and there is a river there called the Morningstar. Drains the north side of the Ballyhoura Hills and flows out past Kilmallock, thence to the Shannon estuary. It's as likely a connection as any..?
