says that Philippe Varlet found a precursor to the reel version in a publication from the mid-18th century.
A couple of years ago, I heard a two-part version of the reel, with the parts in reverse order, that the fiddler had learned from the late Tom Anderson in Shetland.

Possibly the earliest take on this melody, Scottish, and very likely heavily swung, a rant... Unfortunately I haven't seen this collection... The information given is via "The Fiddler's Companion", Andrew Kuntz, where the other relationships are also linked to...

But they are there alphabetically, both this tune and "Humours Of Ballyconnell"...
I was trying to find a recording of "The Duke of Athol's Rant" to do a transcription from, but haven't had any luck so far...

It really drives along
Lovely tune 'c' and doesn't it go.
I've just played it through and found myself automatically playing a few bars differently:
'A' music bar 2 = | dcd B2d |
'C' music bar 3 = | g2e A2e |
'C' music bar 7 = | g2e b2c |
It just happened that way. What think you??
