This is a Brian Finnegan tune, off his album "When the Party's Over." Transcribed by Devin McCabe.

Brett that was originally Devin's transcription I used but changed where my rendition varies from his and I have to say I have never even heard the Brian Finnegan recording so I probably shouldn't have the right to say.
Hope Brian Finnegan is ok about this use and abuse of his tune. Also apologies to Devin and anyone else that may have inadvertently been offended - have I left anyone out?

Me.. offend me please...
I'm not familiar with this tune, but it seems to me the 4th bar of the second part should go thusly: |cAA d2 A_eA|

Jack I wouldn't dare try and offend you
Not sure what the underscore signifies on your ABC but the d2 is really a tied d-d which I would probably represent using brackets for the slur - not sure if this is the correct way:
|cAA(d d)AeA|
# Posted on January 29th 2008 by Donough
You use a hyphen between the notes
# Posted on January 29th 2008 by Dow
|cAAd- dAeA|
# Posted on January 29th 2008 by Dow
Donough, the underscore makes the e flat. That way you have a chromatic ascending line: c#, d, eb, e

Again, I haven't heard this tune played, but this makes more sense to me as far as the ABCs go.

Dow's way to write this bar
|cAAd- dAeA|
gives a score which is much easier to read - it shows to ignorants like myself where the emphasises are!
# Posted on January 29th 2008 by swisspiper
| cAAd- dA_eA |
~ don't blame Dow, it's Tao ~ it is 'the way', reflecting the nature, the anima of the thing represented...
# Posted on January 29th 2008 by ceolachan
Hey, swisspirate, whuzzuh 'emphasises'? Who luvs yuh babe?
# Posted on January 29th 2008 by ceolachan
The way I hear the tune the bar actually ends on the "e":
|cAA d2 A e2|
Jack, I was a bit confused about using an underscore as I thought you were dealing with the slurring part. I should have known about the flat but it didn't occur to me that you might actually be suggesting an e-flat in there.
I can't remember the last time I had to add a flat accidental to notate a tune whereas sharps and naturals seem to happen quite often.
I am just so suprised that Dow came and went without pouring scorn on the tune with its silly syncopated bits. He would like it even less if he heard the risque chords I use accompanying this tune.
Swisspiper, I do tend to agree with you in that |cAAd - dA e2| is a much neater way of writing what I wrote above, and maintains the reel structure.

Oh man... this'll be the last time I upload transcriptions that aren't my own (or stolen from Donough at least). I've updated the ABCs before the site builds the dots for it.

"Take A Message To Julie" C: Brian Finnegan
I haven't heard the recording and am not familiar with this tune, but it did remind me of a couple of slow reels and that's where I went with it, slowly and in a contemplative mind set ~ with visiting a few other places on the way.
I was just going to write it out with 'lead-ins' and not 1st and 2nd endings, which would allow the transcription to resolve where the tune goes ~ on E, for E Dorian, but ~ I got a little carried away ~ enjoying the tune and tickling it differently here and there, so here are some other possibilities with it, and me in a reflective mood ~

K: e harmonic minor ~ with a raised 7th ~ ^d / ^D
That's where the melody took me. As I've said, I haven't the recording and I'd just cut and pasted button's transcription to play from, ignoring the key signature he'd given as E Dorian... Well, Mr. Finnegan, if it was Dorian you intended, I'm not playing it in the very contemplative key of e minor, harmonic...
# Posted on January 29th 2008 by ceolachan
Damn letter mixups too, I must be exhausted and I've a class to teach tonight ~ correction ~ "I'm now ('w' not 't') playing it in the very contemplative key of e minor, harmonic..." Yes, it is frustrating, probably more so for me than you...

Original ?
I may be able to post a transcription for this one. I have the original recording on cassette. Some years back, Malcolm Reavell, whom I've mentioned here before, transcribed most of the tunes from that recording. I'll see if "Julie's" one of them. If not, I'll have a go at my own transcription, but it won't be this side of "Celtic Connections".
# Posted on January 29th 2008 by Kenny
I was just about to send you an email after reading the 'Comments' for the recording and seeing that it was no longer in circulation, and finding your mention of transcriptions by Malcolm Reavell... I look forward to it, either side of "Celtic Connections"...

Donough put it this way, whatever you assume I am thinking right now about this tune - your assumption will most likely be correct

Who could second guess you Dowser? That'd be like trying to catch rain with a tennis racket...

I gave the recording a listen and it turns out there aren't even any tied notes at all. Here's my transcription direct from the recording:
