A clog dance. Alston is a town in Northumberland, a market center of the River South Tyne region, and, at 1,000 feet above sea level, is reputed to be the highest such marketplace in England. Graham Dixon (1995) says that in the 19th century Alston was an important center for the regional lead and coal mining.

Alston is now in Cumbria (Cumberland, before 1974 or so).
Its early history is a most fantastic wool-ball that I have yet to make sense of.
It rivals Buxton (Derbyshire) for being the highest proper town in England, but I gather Buxton pips it.

I have this as Manchesters (Joshua Jackson Manuscripts, 1798) which is quite different. Anyone know this by another name?

The transcription you've given as "The Manchester Hornpipe", as you've given above, is what I'd call a 'different' hornpipe altogether ~ "The Liverpool Hornpipe"... Maybe Joshua Jackson wasn't so good with geography? ~ or didn't like Liverpool?
