Guess I'm a little late for Christmas time, but I figured somebody already did this. I like playing it like this as a hornpipe, but it also works well as a polka:

Deck The Halls

John K on his CD "Wassail" says this was a traditional Welsh tune, known as "Nos Galan" -Welsh for New Years's Eve - and hence played on New Year's Eve. So you're not too late!

Dawns Calan / New Year's Eve Dance ~ a Welsh Twmpath Dawns

Basic step: 1 2 3 hop (skip) ~ throughout (hornpipe step)

Formation: lines-of-3, usually a gent with a lady on either side, but any combination will do. All lines-of-3 face around the hall in Line-of-Direction (LOD), ACW, around the hall. Only the centers progress, around the hall one place forward, ACW, at the end of each turn of the dance, once through the melody...

1 - 8 ~ Advance & Retire twice
1 - 4 ~ (arches) Gent raises a R-arch with his R-hand partner, L-hand woman dances under and around back to place, followed by the man
5 - 8 ~ Gent raises a L-arch with his L-hand partner, R-hand partner dances under and around back to place, followed by the man
1 - 4 ~ Gent arms R with R-hand partner, turning CW
5 - 8 ~ Gent arms L with L-hand partner, turning ACW (=CCW)
9 - 16 ~ Hey for 3, starting with the Gent passing R-shoulders with his R-hand partner ~ finishing by progressing forward to join and take hands with the next line-of-3...

"Dawns Flodau Nantgarw" is a different dance, primarily for exhibition, danced 'in costume', and not from the Welsh Twmpath (barndance / ceilidh) tradition...
