He likes to play it unswung, as a reel...
"Shincliffe is a pretty village a mile or two upriver from Durham City (UK). It is Durham's equivalent to Godstow near Oxford, or Grantchester near Cambridge." ~ nicholas
The Hornpipe version given is as bowdlerized by yours truly... I hope I don't make a new enemy over this, I have enough already...

'button', the first one at the top is for you, though the triplets should have all read like this for that take ~ d/e/f instead of (3def... Actually, for you, I should have eliminated those altogether...

The Shincliffe Reel
I must say, I prefer it the way I wrote it! I wanted to compose something compatible with some Shetland tunes and rants that get played in a local session, even though it's not a rant, so I play it as a member of that family. Still, ceol, I will not demand penance, leaving that to your conscience; a few trips on your knees up and down Tryfan between now and Burns Night, perhaps......?.!!

Nice tune Nicholas
Hornpipe/reel... either way, it's a well written, memorable and versatile tune.

AAAAA!!! ~
You did say 'rant' didn't you? Well, I tend to swing rants, and if I were to add one to this site, it wouldn't be filed under 'reels'... But, I agree with MH, or I wouldn't have had so much fun with it that I felt I owed it to the melody to give it wider circulation than it might glean tucked at the bottom of your 'details', I mean, who else besides me goes around reading members details, eh?

"The Shincliffe Rant" ~ heh, heh, heh, I like that
(Shetland? ~ nah!)
Once you release your tune to the wild and some ferile dog like me chases it down and starts gnawing on it, well, it won't quite look the same afterwards...

It's just too, how do I say it, English...

The Shincliffe
Well, naturally, because it IS English! But there's English tunes that fellow-travel with the Celts and Shelties, and English tunes that go with the oom-pahs, and this one's definitely one of the former. Try it as a reel, at a fair lick.

Heh, heh, heh ~
I like English tunes, and English ale, and a few Englishers too... Of course, I would have taken it as you first had it, at a clip, but it didn't want any of that, deciding for itself, in my hands anyway, that it was more of a rant than a reel, though still filed under 'r'... Happy New Year Nicky! You can toilet paper the place the next time you're passing by on the M6...

It's the other side of the family that are into burning holiday cottages and taking the air out of car tyres with English license plates. I'd never do that, I'm a chicken at heart...
