Anyone know what key is 'standard' for this tune? Every time I hear it, it seems to be in a different key!

Winnie Hayes

Not very sure, but it's in Ador on many recordings. There's a very similar tune in G major, which is called The Old Tipperary: http://thesession.org/tunes/display.php/2599

As a mediocre whistle and flute player I personally prefer playing this tune in Edor. You can watch and listen to Mary Custy playing it in the flute-friendly key: http://www.custysmusic.com/mall/CustysTraditionalMusicShop/donal_lunny.htm

According to Dublin fiddler Kevin O'Reilly, Winnie Hayes was a concertina player from Co. Clare. Maybe related to Kitty Hayes.

It must have been meant to be in Edor, surely. Those high C's and D's would be a bit much on the fiddle wouldn't they?

It's nice in Ddor.

Who wrote this

dose anyone know who wrote this tune ?

I play this in Ador too, but an octave lower on the B/C box.
I roll the Bs in the second and sixth measures instead of the As like here. Sounds good following "Coppers and Brass", or after "Cat in the Corner," or alone, as a nutritious snack.

I recently found all the musicians who have recorded this tune in Edor cite Micho Russell as the source. Charlie Piggott informs us Winnie Hayes "lived to be the grand age of 100 years and died in 1980s...." It seems she was not related to Kitty Hayes. See: http://www.theyllbegoodyet.com/track_08.php

Who added "the Yellow Wattle" as an alternative title for this jig? Completely different tunes though they are both associated with Micho Russell.

I'm innocent...

Discussion: Yet another tune identification question

I've been trying to figure out where I know this tune from, its very familiar, and a great tune. The first of the two that Donal Lunny and Mary Custy play in this video:

Winnie Hayes was certainly not related directly to Kitty Hayes although they were from the same area. There is a connection though, one of the Russel's sisters was married to a fluteplayer who was a neighbour of Kitty when she was young. He learned the tune from WInnie Hayes and later gave it to Micho.
Kitty visited the Russells during hte early 40s but that's a different story again. Packie played at her wedding in 1948.

Now you I like 'klfarboy'... (Is there danger in that?) I love seeing a bit of context... :-)

Uh oh, the expresso is espressing... If you're in the neighbourhood ~ but if you don't like strong coffee, there's tea too...

Thanks for the handy cut and paste C--nice to tie the transcription to the tune file.

Thank you for taking the effort to do it...valued ears... ;-) You produce good transcriptions...

# Posted on December 6th 2006 by ceolachan

wish I could play as well as I type.... :-/

# Posted on December 6th 2006 by Will CPT

Nice tune. I am just learning it on fiddle and box (C#/D)

As to typing, I wish my instruments had the musical equivalent of automatic spell-checking!
