Ahhhhh.............

I was browsing the the sessions page when I seen a funny story about fiddler Paddy the Hat in the comments of Sandy Bell's link
http://www.thesession.org/sessions/display/59

A member called Cath left a comment about Paddy's unusual fiddle skill. Indeed he claimed during a visit to Skye that he could hit a note on the fiddle that drove women to ecstasy. So Farquhar Macdonald (best known for The Tongadale Reel http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/5473 ) wrote this tune to celebrate Paddy's talent.

It's a fun tune to play.

Paddy The Ahhhhh (reel)

Ok, so what was that note?

THE note

Unfortunately Paddy charges 20 measures of whisky for the information but then he's impossible to understand.

Didn't the good O'Farrell manage that trick when he played An Phis Fliuch to the ladies in London a couple of hundred years ago?

You know the gaelic then, Te he, this could easily go too far!!!

Well, my knowledge of Gaelic is "just" about enough to know that in polite Gaelic-speaking society I'd best refer to that tune as "O'Farrell's Welcome to Limerick" ;-)

Are B/B/B and similar intended in this tune to be played as trebles, e.g. (3 BBB, or much tighter, as written?

# Posted on October 24th 2007 by lazyhound

Trevor, I can't speak for bogman, but I use the slashes to mark bowed triplets and the (3XXX method for slurred triplets. Keeps it clear in my own mind when I'm transcribing verbatim and want to capture the difference there. And the slash triplets sound better than the (3's on some midi programs.

Yes, it's played with the notes slashed with the last of the three having the emphasis. Farquhar is a GHB player as well as a fiddler and triplets like this are like a substitute for a doubling/cran.

But of course I've submitted it as Farquhar has written it to show how he plays it. If you prefer it as straight triplets then there's nothing wrong with that.

Thanks for that feedback.
