Tommy Makem's
In memory of Tommy Makem, here's a reel which came from one of his records. He may well have composed it, but I don't remember any composer being mentioned on the record sleeve.
Aberdeen City Library used to have a very good collection of folk/traditional records in the 1970s/80s. Tommy made a solo record with a title something to do with "Greenwood". Donal Lunny and Sean O'Rourke, formerly of the "JSD Band" were guest musicians on it.
One track in particular was outstanding. It was a poem with musical backing called "Keady Morning". I'm sure Tommy wrote the poem, but not sure whether or not he wrote the tunes. There were 4 verses, each speeding up in tempo, and the poem depicted the town of Keady waking up in the morning, and coming to life. It started with just Tommy playing a slow air on whistle, 2nd tune was an air, slightly faster with Donal Lunny coming in on bouzouki, 3rd tune was a slip-jig, and it ended up with this reel, with Sean O'Rourke on flute.
It's a bit reminiscent of "Anything For Jonjo" to begin with.
I've never heard it played other than on the record, but it would be a pity if it disappeared.
