Liddell's Hornpipe

This is one to be found in the Charlton Memorial Tune Book, a collection of tunes suited for the Northumbrian Pipes but whose introduction says, "We have not sought to confine ourselves to 'Northumbrian tunes'.."

I do not know where this tune originated or who Liddell was, though perhaps the latter has left other musical traces.

This is a pretty cool tune. I think it would go well with Glamorganshire Hornpipe. http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/1995 . Anywho, just for my sake, here is a different format of the same tune...

The tune's not dotted in the source I've given above. (Some of the hornpipes are, some are not.)

Liddell's Hornpipe

On Pete Loud's website giving lists of tunes, Liddell's Hornpipe is not in the extensive list he gives of "Northumbrian And Tyneside Tunes", but is in another one headed "Popular Session Tunes", featuring many Irish, Scottish, Shetland tunes - tunes which, as I understand it, have no (or no obvious) origin in NE England.

Judging by the NE composers Pete has listed along with the tunes attributed to them, if Liddell of this hornpipe had been known as a NE composer, he'd quite likely have been mentioned in Pete's list of Northumbrian tunes, which he isn't. So I assume for now that this hornpipe doesn't come from North-East England, but from somewhere else (Scotland? Ireland? America?).

(England? Wales?)

Transylvania? Even vampires dance the hornpipe... 8-)

In different situations I have played this both swung and straight...

L: 1/2 at 120 bpm

Straight and played more like a reel at around L: 1/2 at 120 bpm...
