"Miss Heather Frances Cassidy's Birthday" ~ by Alistair Cassidy

Composed for his sister on this day, her birthday... This is as he wanted it, unadulterated. I did wait a few hours before posting it, but the man obviously wasn't budging. This isn't quite how I'd take it, but not far from the source... ;-)

Alistair Cassidy = 'No Cause for Alarm', his alias on site here... Maybe now he has cause for alarum...

# Posted on July 4th 2007 by ceolachan

Why?

I asked you not to post it and I even explained my reasons why.

# Posted on July 4th 2007 by No Cause For Alarm

And what does "not far from the source" mean?

# Posted on July 4th 2007 by No Cause For Alarm

No, you said you wouldn't post it. I just went over your emails. I better check them again... :-/

# Posted on July 4th 2007 by ceolachan

I've just been playing it... By 'not far from the source' I meant unchanged from your notes in any way...

# Posted on July 4th 2007 by ceolachan

Alright, I've just checked the half dozen emails you sent me today and this is the ONLY place where you make any mention of your not posting it:

"Just to say again I have no intention of posting the tune. I would need to post about 150 ancient Irish tunes first!"

Well, you don't have to post 150 ancient Irish airs now because I posted the tune. If you had said 'don't post it' ~ I wouldn't have. There is worse to follow though, and I did warn you, and I have been playing it... 8-)

It has that touch of extra brightness taking it up just that one step... There are some rhythmic variations thrown in too... It's a lovely tune, a 'sweet' waltz...

Well I have calmed down a bit now. I don't want to go into the whys and wherefores anyway and certainly not on here but, as long as Jeremy is ok with it then it can stay. It was a bit of a surprise to say the least though (hints or not!).

As for the variations - great. I was playing it on my F whistle anyway so my real version should be in Bb - topping your A by half a tone!! This 'competition' is beginning to sound awfully pipe-bandish! 8-)

I like some of your variations, certainly and was adding some rolls in anyway. The transcription is only really the bare bones. The three crotchets that come in a row in, for example, the 6th bar are not really played exactly evenly (as the midi would do) but with a bit of a swing with the first note probably the longest (not as dramatic as crotchet, quaver, quaver though). I thought about putting in two crotchets rather than a quaver as the lead in to the second part too (and occasionally played it that way) but decided against it because I quite liked the repeated pattern across that line which is maintained by keeping it as one note.

You went a bit overboard on that second part though didn't you? It's not a march! :-/

Anyway just my tuppence worth. Nice tune though - thanks for sharing. 8-)

That is meant to say "not as dramatic as minim, quaver, quaver"!

# Posted on July 5th 2007 by No Cause For Alarm

March! ~ You don't want to get me started down that road... :-D

# Posted on July 5th 2007 by ceolachan

You said you'd added something to the comments, but I thought you'd meant 'context' in a personal way, like a little something about the inspiration and the situation of its creation, even just a paragraph about Miss Heather Frances Cassidy? But no, you had to go off on minims, quavers, crotchets and Bb... I was hoping for a bit of the heart behind it all... Pretty please? :-/

But you said it all - It was my sister's 27th birthday and I had just got a new F whistle and was feeling like I wanted to give it a run out. If you are expecting a story about a dying dog or summer holidays in Provence then you are going to be very disappointed! :-)

# Posted on July 5th 2007 by No Cause For Alarm

Damn, and I was hoping for blood and gore... 8-)

# Posted on July 5th 2007 by ceolachan

You do know you've done the worst injustice to the poor girl you could, aside from being her brother ~ you gave her age... Tsk, tsk tsk... :-D

# Posted on July 5th 2007 by ceolachan

Well - I would love to be 27 again. It is so young. Not like 28 - I feel ancient!!

ALthough that is of course all relative, isn't it Ceol? :-)

# Posted on July 5th 2007 by No Cause For Alarm

Now I'm starting to feel antiquated... :-(
