Down and Out

This tune was a "request" of Ceolachan ;-)

You can hear the track at:

http://www.myspace.com/daimh

It is the one titled "Mazzy"

I hope it is done right. It is transcribed by ear from listening to the CD (not something I do very often!) I realise that some of the bars at the end do not add up perfectly but adding rests didn't seem to work. It seems to be just played through giving it an off-beat feel. Any thoughts or corrections will be welcomed.

Down and Out - By Colm O'Rua

The tune was written by Colm O'Rua, Daimh's banjo and mandola player. He went on his travels to Spain and on the first night went into a bar and drunk Guiness, not realising how expensive it was. When he sobered up he realised he had spent all of his money and survived for the rest of his time there through busking, getting enough money for potatoes and cabbage - the peasant's dish in Santiago but the national dish back home in Ireland!

:-O

Uh oh! ~ but thanks for the thought...

Cause for alarm! ;-)

You've almost made me put of dinner for another half hour. I've just caught the tune, after a bit of rewiring, and I'll try to do dinner and the tune at the same time, and try to beat Jeremy to the dots conversion. He's usually away on a Friday night, let's hope I can do it.

By the way Alarm, I'm chuffed. It is a lovely tune and I like the band, good kick... But I haven't the pleasure of any of their recordings yet... Cross your fingers... Back to dinner now... :-/

A mazurka yes, but they play it very fast...

# Posted on June 15th 2007 by ceolachan

I know it is fast but I am not aware of a way to speed up the midi track short of halving the length of all the notes!

The Key

I forgot to mention that Daimh play this tune in Eb rather than D but for the sake of everyone's sanity, especially mine, I have put it in D.

Quick ~ check your mailbox!!! :-/

No, don't speed anything up, your transcript is screwed probably because of their speed. They are pushing it...

Actually Alarum, as it reads on that link, and I've checked it a number of ways, it is sounding as E rather than Eb... So, even worse prospects... You made the wise move to drop it down to D, and I think it goes nicely that bit lower, and it opens it up to other instruments...

For posterity and future embarrassment (the de'il did it!)

This is the sort of thing I'd get sent to face a corner and to don the 'Dunce' cap, for talking back to the teacher... And I'd be made to bend over in front of the class and given a few whacks with the holy paddle, drilled holes to make it sting more... I guess I never learned... :-( ~ 8-)

If this doesn't go right I'm innocent. I managed dinner, preparation and consumption, and to record and transcribe this as well in about an hour. But, if Alarum lacks confidence in my skills at ABCing, or like some of my teachers doesn't like being caught out and goes all stubborn, well, we'll see what the dots end up like, if it ever converts or survives, and if that happens I can always add my take here on the back page... ;-)

Note Alarum, good or bad, I only tease people I like...

Like whatever! Talk to the hand old man!

For all it is jest - don't rub it in. Your transcription took major tweekings to make work at all (starting with "X:1" at the top and moving on from there).

Anyway I still like my C part better (although I have changed it!) -Yours has nae emphasis at all! I may work on it more if I get the chance!

# Posted on June 15th 2007 by No Cause For Alarm

12/8 ~ right... By the way, that X was yours, I only edited the ABCs, well not even that, as I transcribed it from their playing...

"Yours has nae emphasis at all!" ~ whadday want in an hour with dinner to prepare and eat as well, and under the influence of Breton cidre ~ bow markings?

Keep well... And by the way, however it finally comes together, thanks for the thought, appreciated...

Old man, gosh, respect...

Funny, there's no calluses on your hand. So, you lead a soft life eh? You must be a city slicker. Now, your palm ~ I see ~ damn, what's that ~ go give them a good scrub and we'll try palm reading again later...

The Key part 2

The key on that track is however definately Eb and not E. It might be slightly sharp but it is nowhere near E. It is pitched to fit on Angus' Highland Pipes.

# Posted on June 15th 2007 by No Cause For Alarm

That makes sense, but on my computer it is coming out in E, or closer to that than Eb, and I've checked it a few times with different instrumentation. And to check against other items to make sure it isn't my kit that is out by a half step... Curious...
