Written by John Kirkpatrick.
I know a slightly different setting, as follies.

C: field
Hiya Brent--another fun tune! And please don't forget to put the composer in ABC's C: field to make sure someone doesn't end up calling it "trad."

Composer credit
That's what these comments are for - giving information like the composer of a tune (where applicable).
When submitting a tune, there is no option for adding a "C:" field. It's not that I don't want people to credit tunes but that I want them to do it here in the comments section in fully formed sentences.
Will has already pointed out above that this tune is written by John Kirkpatrick.

Another Name?
I heard a funny story last night about this tune. I learned this from my brother in the UK but a couple of people here in Quebec learned the tune from a festival in France. For over a year they knew the tune as John Patterson. You try saying Jump At The Sun with a French accent!

Another Key
I've been learning this in Dm (original?)and have just found that our local session tends to play it in Em (apparently easier for G/D melodeons!)
Bother - I'd better try and learn it again in another key (or 2) - not a direct shift on a concertina (english)

Local color
This is one of the over-played tunes in my group of friends, but we've messed with it and written a mafor version. I don't have the music as no one has written it up, but it sounds quite amusing.
Some of my friends have played this in a set with The Wizard's Walk.

I think this makes it easier (possible?) for melodians to play.

"The South of France" ~ bodhran guy's submission & comments
I suspect Jeremy will eventually find the duplication, so here are the comments that followed the above transcription, 'bodhran guy' first:
I learned it in this key (e minor) under that name ("The South of France")...

It certainly looks and sounds like "Jump at the Sun", which I learned myself from someone that had spent time in the South of France.
I now live in the Pyrenees, and if you can find that on the map, just look for the South of the country. This tune is described by one local medieval band as "traditionnal", and as a "Circadian Circle".
Mind though, I came across a recording of Carolan's "Fanny Powers'" by a local folklorist here in the mountains. This tune was also described as locally traditional.
I'd have to look into it when I got a few minutes to rub together.

It's not trad. "Jump At the Sun" was penned by John Kirkpatrick, accordion and concertina player from England.

"Jump at the Sun" / "The South of France" ~ just a matter of octaves
Here is 'bodhran guy's' transcription again, correcting the C to c and raising some notes from the second part up an octave, but since it is a repeat, giving some variation on the tune as well:

Well, now, with all that above and the various bits and opportunities, here it is again, but back in d minor, using those various options, like the octave drop 'bodhran guy' has, and other fancies, twice through ~

I like the story of Planxty Fanny Powers (Power? Poer?) embedding itself as a traditional Pyrenean tune. But why not? However far they extend musical copyright, Carolan - R.I.P. - is now well outside it.

Jump at the sun
just discovered this tune thanks to jeremy and kardshark87. really like it but the F ending the fourth bar just HAS to be an E !! ............most of the fairies around here are rather traditional and tend to stick to fly agarics and magic mushrooms
but from my own recent experiences in the pyrennees I wouldnt be at all surprised to see them dancing through lysergic landscapes
to that old local tune Le Roi Des Fees!

I play this in E (I think.. I starts on an E) so It segues nicely with Dribbles of Brandy and (i think..) Herbet the Sherbet

Heard this one around sessions in Cork 2000., Know no more than that really, I think its pretty much as I picked it up by ear, but...
Great little tune, always raises a smile! Not sure of its provenance, anyone know a bit more?
My first attempt at ABC with a little help and correction from a friend.

Further 'Comments':
The first phrase sounds like part of a TV show theme song... Fun tune though

"Jump at the Sun" ~ Cymru / England / Scotland / Ireland / Brittany / France
C: John Kirkpatrick
I was again reacquainted with this jig and was smiling the whole time, remembering the various places I've stumbled across it. It got spread in Cymru, but with John Kirkpatrick there on the Welsh Borders it's not a surprise. It gets airplay for the Welsh equivalent of the ceilidh, the twmpath dawns. I remember stumbling across it in Brittany too, including Lorient. It also gets regular play across North America, Canada & the U.S.A., where John Kirkpatrick has done some touring, and especially for the dance from called contra dancing which particularly favours 32 bar tunes...
I suspected, such a spread in part accounts for the different names and keys. I have both played it for dance and danced to it, and we used to sometimes do some crazy stuff in accompaniment to bars 1 & 2, 5 & 6...

correction ~ dance 'from' ~ dance 'form'

I first heard "Jump At The Sun" at an Irish Session in Wichita, Kansas about ten years ago. Five years ago, one of the flute players at the local session heard this tune at the Folk Festival in Winfield, Kansas and liked it so much that she learned it and started playing it at the local session.

Chords for Jump at the Sun
Anyone got a set of chords for this tune?
# Posted on June 30th 2008 by Rhlloydbgf
One set of chords for Jump at the Sun
From barrysmiths90's setting above, the chords would be:
||: Em | Em | Em | Em B | E | E | E Am | B7 Em :||
||: Em | B7 | Em | B B7 | Em | B7 | Em Am | B7 Em :||
I think I have a slightly different batch. Will post it when I can confirm that.
The proper listing should include:
Jump At The Sun - composed by John Kirkpatrick - World Copyright © Squeezer Music 1989
It was written earlier, but that's when it was copyrighted.
Cheers!
