I don't have a definitive source for this tune. Its one that I enjoy on the fiddle and turns up in different Appalachian traditions under different names in different keys. On the A part the G is held through most of the phrase and a D drone is heavy on the second part. Its a driving little thing in my opinion. It reminds me of some Irish and Scottish tunes, but I can't seem to pin them down right now. I may have more on this later. Id be interested in knowing if anyone out there knows of Irish or Scottish variants... (or English, Welsh, Northumbrian too...)

Times have changed.
I was taught a version of this tune as a boy by my fiddle teacher except that he called it "Nigger in the woodpile",Isnt it nice that political correctness infiltrates every fibre of culture?

P.s.
The version I had was in the key of A and in 2/4 time I am pretty sure it was in a little published tutor book.
