"The Pockar" ~ a Martin Donohue production

Catch this between the maestro's hands and be inspired:

http://comhaltas.ie/music/detail/comhaltaslive_200_4_martin_donohoe/

I suspect he'll have more to add here, but for now, here's at least an attempt at transcribing his tune from his playing. To me it has a nice barndance / schottische bounce to it, and I really wanted to file it under 'barndances', but the 'source' has it as a hornpipe, so, with respect, here it is. Apologies for any rough bits, I take full blame there. It is a lovely tune and I now have to go recommend it in a 'Discussion' about such things.

I'll be back... ;-)

Brendan, I waited almost 3 months and nothing happened. :-/ Remember this? ~

"I might ask Martin for that - there are a couple of variations there, obviously, and I'd want to make sure that I post the 'definitive' version!"

"Tasty Touches" / "Blúiríní Blasta" ~ 2 CDs worth! :-)

I would love to put his latest album, "Tasty Touches", despite it making me want to check the cupboards for donuts or lick my fingers, but alas, I haven't it, and I have searched and searched and can't for the life of me find a tune/song list for it anywhere... Maybe someone out there has it and will add it to the recordings here, 2 CDs worth and 40+ tracks, Whew! No wonder it took so long from the first one, "Free Spirit"...

"The Pockar" ~ barndance / schottische? ~ in the Cavan blood!

This tune makes me dance, and that is usually a 'barndance' or 'schottische', which this has about it. But hey, we are talking about a Cavan lad, and Fremanagh is just over the way from there... I found myself playing it in C Major following the video, but I've transcribed it here in D... I like it the way Martin sometimes lays on the crotchets/quarter notes. That is part of what makes it for me more of a barndance/schottische, like ending a 4-bar phrase with a dunk dunk ~ A2 A2 / D2 D2, etc...

# Posted on May 30th 2007 by ceolachan

It's a good tune 'c' . I understand why you refer to it's 'Schottisheness' . I've just played it on my D/G club with accidentals and it is a most enjoyable tune to play. The triplet in bar 4 means playing across three rows and that is god for me as it pushes my playing along further. Thanks for putting it here. TG

Discussion: Seán Ó Sé, The Pocar ?

# Posted on October 8th 2007 by Bannerman
http://www.thesession.org/discussions/display/15425

No need to take offence you lot down there in Cork, this is just the title of a newly composed hornpipe by Cavan's Martin Donohoe!

Now’s your chance to see Martin Donohoe in action playing "The Pocar" and the singer who inspired it, Seán Ó Sé from Cork. No doubt Seán, who performed with the legendary O’Riada Ceoltóirí Cualann group in the Gaeity Theatre back in the sixties, will also include “An Poc ar Buile” amongst his repertoire, a song with a great sing-along chorus. Martin and Seán are part of the Comhaltas American concert tour group who’ll be performing for the next couple of weeks ~" ~ North America, October 2007

"The Pockar" ~ a Martin Donohue production

Notes from the link to his performance at the top, courtesy of Comhaltas, and a repeat of the link, well deserving of the repeat too. Catch it ~

"A button accordion solo by Martin Donohue featuring a hornpipe which he composed in honour of the tour’s Fear a’ Tí, the famous singer Séan Ó Sé. One of the many great songs associated with Séan is “An Poc ar Buille” and Martin calls the tune “The Pockar”."

Martin Donohoe - An Pocar repeat

Many thanks Ceolachan for reproducing this information here. I thought the repeat would be useful for anyone who missed it first time or who has joined the Mustard Board since particularly in view of the fact that Martin will be touring in Canada and America from this week onwards. There's nothing like seeing the music performed live in concert and opportunities like this don't come up too often.
