Does anyone know this tune?

This reel appears as "Ceo na gCnoc" on Mike Rafferty's "Speed 78," but I doubt that's the correct title of the tune. Here's the link to what is widely known as "Ceo na gCnoc": http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/7260 The two tunes contain both similar and different bits. There are many other similar Ador tunes, but I believe this is more related to "The Tap Room."

By the way, Mike Rafferty cites his past pupil Brian Holleran as the source. Please note this transcription is not the exact transcription of Mr. Rafferty's playing of the tune.

Thanks Lesl for pointing out the similarities between this tune and "the Gosson Who Bate His Father": http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/3501 Now I think this is actually a 2-part version of "The Temple Hill": http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/2626 It's also related to "The Tap Room."

Mary Got Married In the Snow

Hi Slainte, well, it does seem related to the Temple Hill but just like the other tunes mentioned, there are bits in it which aren't quite it. Harry Bradley took a look at this for me once when I'd first thought it was Ceo na gCnoc, but he also said that's a different tune. Of course it could be a western or southern regional variation of Ceo na gCnoc. I just call it 'Brian's reel' but I have a few others named that too.. I don't recall if I ever asked Don Meade about this one. I never asked Brian myself seeing as Mike said he didn't remember. My husband feels its the Laurel Tree, despite the differences. At any rate Mike re-named it when he gave a concert shortly after Mary was married in that snowstorm, before Speed 78. At least that distinguished it from other tunes!

I think your transcription is pretty close. Anyway here's the way I had it when I was first given it (this is not a transcription off the cd either):

X:325
T:Brian Holleran's
T:[later named Mary Got Married in the Snow]
R:reel
S:Mike Rafferty
H:Mike said he had it from Brian and he doesn't know where
H:Brian got it and Brian didn't have a name for the tune. It
H:seems to be in the family of the Gosson That Beat
H:His Father and the Castlebar Tramp/Traveller and the
H:Laurel Tree and Ceo na gCnoc.

Thanks Lesl for the first-hand info. I'll adopt the title Mr. Rafferty invented.

Jimmy O'Brien-Moran's Ceo na gCnoc

Revisiting this tune once again, I haven't transcribed Jimmy O'Brien-Moran's Ceo na gCnoc to be sure, but this one is pretty close to that.
