Tear the Calico

This reel is almost identical to the Clogher reel played as the last tune in the Kilfenora Reel set (ie after Connemara Stockings and Jim McCormicks) - a great tune for set dancers!

Really Dmix?

This tune seems to flow better (for me) in Dmaj, meaning with C sharp. Don't the Chieftains play it with a sharp C?

Just asking because I've tried to play it with the C natural and it sounds wrong.

I learned a slightly different version in Clare last year:

dB~B2 gBfB | ed (3Bcd egfe | dB~B2 gBfB |1 edBd A3B :|2 edBd A3g ||
faaf g2fg | ed (3Bcd egfe |faaf g2fg | edBd e3g|
faaf g2fg | ed (3Bcd egfe|fa~a2 bfaf | defd egfe||

I don't hear this great tune played so often, so I can't tell if my version is more common or not.

Tear the Calico: "Quiet" Lilting Version

You can listen to a fantastic lilting version of the tune: http://www.rte.ie/radio1/ceilihouse/rams/18june.smil (starts around 23:00) Well, it's advisable to listen to the interview with the two ladies, which starts around 19:00. I find it very interesting to know how they started lilting and how they settled in Manchester.

I like this tune for the end of a set and played at a quicker tempo. It's hard to get this tune out of your head.
