I learned this from the sound clips on the web site of the English Folk Dance and Song Society, Spring 2007. Not exactly a jig but a nice tune all the same. Anyone want to tell me what type of rhythm it is?

JIG but played steadily.

The Recruiting Officer
It's certainly written as a jig in the Joshua Jackson collection of 1798. Goes well with Seven Stars (D) and/or Lady's Plaything (G) from the same collection.
I first heard it played on the whistle at our local Friday night session at the Harrington, Gawsworth, just outside Macclesfield. Good session if you can make it. All welcome.

The recruiting officer
also played as a jig by the pogues, in a set followed by rocky road to dublin and galway races

The recruiting officer
The William Winter manuscript version ( as played by Harbron,Kerr,Rutter and van Eyken ) largely follows the ms notation ; the rhythm is less dotted.
