The words

I learned this as a song several years ago, and only recently heard it as a reel. I am including the words below. (Note: if you are playing this as a reel, you probably want to leave out the A part). Enjoy:

Peat-Fire Flame

A Far away and o'er the moor
B Far away and o'er the moor
Morah waits for a boat that saileth
Far way down Lowland way
I dream a dream I learned, lad
C By the light o' the peat-fire flame
Light for love, for lilt of graildeeds
By the light o' the peat-fire flame
The light the hill-folk yearn for

Far away, down Lowland way
Far away, down Lowland way
Grim's the toil without tune or dream, lad
All you need's a creel and love
For the dream the heart can weave, lad,
By the light o' the peat-fire flame,
Light for love, for lilt, for laughter,
By the light o' the peat-fire flame,
The light the hill-folk yearn for

Far away and o'er the moor,
Far away the tramp and tread,
Tune and laughter of all the heroes
Pulls me onward o'er the trail
Of the dream my heart may weave, lad.
By the light o' the peat-fire flame,
Light for love, for lilt o' graildeeds,
By the light o' the peat-fire flame,
The light the hill-folk yearn for.

Collecting story

I first learnt this song at summer camp in Cape Breton Island in 1974-76. It was very popular at local sessions in the Mabou area.

Are you sure this is a reel?

Isn't this more like a polka than a reel?

Aka Fireside Reel

We first learned this from the second ceilidh collection, 1990, of Taigh na Teud in F#minor. Then we transposed it to Eminor because anyone else who knew it had it in that key. It seems that it's also known as the Fireside Reel in Scottish country dance.
