The Water Of Tyne
A well-known, pretty song tune from North-East England, best played fairly slowly.
I cannot get to my love if I would dee,
For the water of Tyne runs between him (her, it...) and me,
And here I must stand, with the tear in my e'e,
Both sighing and sickly my sweetheart to see.
Oh where is the boatman? my bonny hinny!
Oh where is the boatman, bring him to me -
To ferry me over the Tyne to my honey,
And I will remember the boatman and thee.
Oh where is the boatman - I'll give any money,
And you for your trouble rewarded shall be,
To ferry me over the Tyne to my honey,
Or scull him across that rough river to me.

The Tyne is a big river by English standards and is certainly capable of being pretty rough. In the later eighteenth century a colossal spate swept away most of the bridges on the Tyne and other local rivers. Ferrymen must have been in some demand thereafter. There's a jig called The Bellingham Boat, attesting one there, on the North Tyne, one of the river's two main branches (it doesn't require a PhD to guess what the other one is called...).
