FLING : Paddy On The Binge

Though L. Nugent plays it one tone lower (Cmaj), I chose to use the more common key of Dmaj. On the tin-whistle, this fling is one the tunes u can easily transpose to another key: in this case, on a D whistle, it can be played in D or in G.
I usually follow it with the reel The Old Torn Petticoat.

As a 'fling', the B-part would not repeat...

To repeat or not to repeat ~

Sean Nugent's playing is lovely, and he does play it with repeats. I suspect it may be his own composition, maybe someone can confirm that. It would be good to credit the source. As has happened with a lot of forms, the connection with the dance is thin to non-existant. While I really like how Sean plays this, beautifully. I would play it as a 'fling', 16 measures, with the B-part having the classic 2nd ending and not repeating it as he does... In other words ~ AAB, using the transcription here.

Sean Nugent's fine rendition includes repeating the B-part, as said previously, and he also plays the tune straight, without swing...the bridge to the reel version?

Oops! ~ I missed that, the lead into the B-part would be more clearly written A/B/c rather than as a triplet...

Composer

According to the liner notes of "Two for Two", this tune was written by Sean O'Driscoll, "the great mult-instrumentalist from Blarney, County Cork."
