"Seán Ó Duibhir a’ Ghleanna" ~ as found in a search online ~ ?

I found the following interesting transcription, but no name was given for the transcriber. If anyone else knows, please give credit. I have only edited out a few grace notes on the following cut-and-paste. The tune would be swung but this transcription was as is, without the '>':

R: set dance
N: Paddy Glackin's version is missing the third bar of the second part.

Hornpipe Setting

Not actually a hornpipe but commonly played as a set dance this tune is supposed to have been developed from the air by Ellen Galvin of Moyasta. Her home recording of it is famous among those who know it and has rocked the foundations of several people's thinking about Irish music when they first heard it.

Mrs. Galvin passed on the tune to Willie Clancy who travelled on the West Clare Railroad to visit her. Mrs Galvin had a store of tunes, among them several of Garrett Barry's that Willie put in wider circulation, I buried my Wife and Danced on Top of her and the one named after herself among them.

John Dwyer of the Glen

I was directed to YouTube in one of your discussions to listen to Angela Carberry and Aiden Quin playing 2 hornpipes. I was taken by the first, a version of John Dwyer of the Glen, which I know I have heard before more or less as played. As I can't find it anywhere I have transcribed it into ABC as faithfully as my playing by ear would allow me ( they were playing a semitone flat which didn't help much).

Re: O Dwyer of the glen ???

The listing is for a hornpipe, but will give it a go !

Re: O Dwyer of the glen ???

Because there is no category for airs, and because they fall into numerous time signatures, you will find airs under a variety of categories on this website, waltz, polka, even jig. Same goes for marches. I am not familiar with this air, but if it is in 4/4 time, perhaps it is the tune you are looking for, just lurking under a different category.

"John O'Dwyer Of The Glen" ~ 3/4 transcriptions

How the midi on site handles 3/4 is closer to what is intended with this transcription, along the lines of how hornpipes are more normally swung ~ the 4/4 I'd given in the past... Both this and the more recent 3/4 transcription just linked to, from hetty, are built on 3s... For the 4/4 version here, N>N (N= Note) is meant ot be divided in that usual way, as 2-to-1 rather than 3-to-1... This transcription in 4/4 was influenced by several transcription I have of this melody, also in 4/4, and recordings...

Seamus Ennis

Is this the same tune Seamus Ennis played on '40 years of Irish piping' under the name Gentle Philip Fahy?

# Posted on August 10th 2009 by Piping Crow

Seamus Ennis and Gentle Philip Fahy

I was just wondering exactly the same thing, Piping Crow, so it was good to see your question.
I'm pretty new to all this and to reading music, but if I play the tune given in the sheet music at the tempo and rhythm that Seamus Ennis uses, I can pick out that it is basically the same tune. That makes sense, because he does say it's a version, not exactly the same tune.
