Johnny and Dorothy Livingston
Greetings...this is my first comment here. I've recently fallen in love with this tune, after seeing it played by Mairi Campbell on YouTube, of all places. I've learned the tune, but I'd love to see the music. Anyone know this?

Johnny and Dorothy Livingston
This is not a reel but a Scottish march, transcribed here from the playing of Mairi Campbell on a YouTube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jt5NXbMtALc), thanks to a link posted by Lisa (coollit) here: http://www.thesession.org/discussions/display/11919.
Our session includes a fiddler who learn a fair portion of his tunes at sessions in Edinburgh ages ago. Mostly Irish tunes, but the occasional Scottish tune sneaks in. This will be a nice addition.

Lisa, thanks for posting the link. Nice march, well played by Mairi Campbell. I've transcribed it from the video here: http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/6461/.
You can also copy and paste the abcs into the tune-converter at www.concertina.net to get a clean pdf print out of the sheet music.

Re: Johnny and Dorothy Livingston
Thank you, whoosis! That's very nice of you! I converted it as recommended and now can distribute it at my little fiddlers' group. Glad you enjoyed the tune too!

Thanks again!
This is one of those deceptively simple tunes. I'm looking forward to mastering it.

Composer?
The two transcriptions are almost note-for-note, but I've never doubted your ears or abilities... Does anyone know who the composer is / was?

My pleasure, Lisa. This march holds together very well and is fun to play on fiddle. Thanks for sharing it.
"C," you ought to be a private eye--my googling came up blank. It's usually faster (and more rewarding) for me to just transcribe a tune from the aural source than try to find the abcs or dots online. But I really appreciate your perseverance in finding what info you can about the tunes.
Interesting how rapidly YouTube has become a tune source for trad musicians....

Yes, wild! Are you aware of the detective series "Monk"? ~ stop laughing, I'm not really that bad...
I was trying to chase up the composer, and failed...

Yes, Adrian...er, I mean C, I've noticed eerie similarities in your quirks.

Re: Johnny and Dorothy Livingstone
The composer of this tune is Mairi Campbell herself. It's named for Johnny and Dorothy Livingstone who farm Balure on the island of Lismore in Argyll. Johnny and Dorothy are great lovers of Scottish music, dance band music in particular, stalwart supporters of the dances at the hall on the island, and lovely dancers themselves. It was at these dances that Mairi was first exposed to traditional music. If you'd like to hear some more of Mairi's tunes, there are a couple, as well as some songs by the two of us on the new Greentrax release by the Cast, 'greengold'. One of Mairi's tunes, 'Jean Yelland', a waltz, is proving a great favourite with fiddlers.
