The Leerie's Air
Not a reel, but a rhythmic slow tune composed in the 80s by singer / songwriter / guitarist Gerry Kaley. New to trad then, he got the hang of backing pretty quickly, both "normal" and swing styles, and composed this tune, which I think's a beauty. He teamed up with fiddler Chuck Fleming and they produced an album, "Shake Loose The Border" (probably Black Crow label) on which this tune features.
"Leerie" is a Scottish term for the man who used to light the gaslamps in the streets. Chuck, being Scottish, might have named the tune, and Gerry may have been inspired by Durham City's remaining gaslights on or near the Cathedral, kept supplied unromantically by the sewerage of the Canons etc. who live nearby.
