"Red Stockings" / "Sanau Coch"
I first learned this tune in Cymru, hence the Welsh name for it, but considering its history, that the earliest notated forms of it are in English, I've switched the names and placed the earlier name "Red Stockings" as the main header and put the Welsh names in the alternate titles list.
I will try to keep up with this and maintain some consistency. Recently I fould the names being switched around without my involvement. This doesn't work so well, as what I've given are 'translations' for the Welsh, and they really aren't 'alternate titles', though I've tended to place them there for consideration.
]Some of the Welsh names are actually the earliest name we have for the tune, like "Meillionen", "Merch Megan" & "Ffarwel I'r Marian". Even far afield, like in North America, both sides of the border, and even in Mexico, the Welsh names tend to be used, in part because of the Welsh groups touring there regularly and the albums in circulation, by groups like Ar Log. Where traditional music and dance are concerned the Americans, U.S.A. & Canada, tend to respect and favour keeping things to their origins where possible. One old friend in Mexico, a teacher of dance, is equally considerate. A number of groups from there I've had the pleasure of sharing Welsh traditions with, and the few times I've come across Welsh tunes in sessions ~ folks tended to use and favour the Welsh titles. If they didn't know them they wanted to, and they wanted to get the pronunciation at least near to the source. Mind you, "Merch Megan" tends to become 'Merk Megan' and "Ffarwel I'r Marian" becomes "Farewel Marian" (also the name of a dance)...
So, I have been starting out giving the Welsh name I have for a tune, but if I find the history and circulation warrants, like here, I'll move the Welsh to the 'alternate title' list. Where it is still more current in Cymru or originates there I will keep the Welsh name as the primary title...if I'm allowed to...
