The Roof Thatcher's

I really enjoy the simple mazurkas, highlands, and barndances from Donegal and the north. They make a great change of pace and mood in the middle of a night of reels and jigs, and dancers always rise to them.

But there are damn few mazurkas in A major. I started noodling around on mandolin one day, and this came out. It's a natural fit on fiddle, and goes well in a set with more common mazurkas in D or G.

Bella!

~ a very pleasant and unexpected surprise between preparing an Italian dinner and eating it...

You'll know this already whatsit, but those other mazurkas, a good load of them, go and have gone nicely as A Major too...

# Posted on November 11th 2006 by ceolachan

Yep, 'C', I've slipped other mazurkas into A, but it was entertaining to set out with intent and forethought to draft one in A.

I didn't notate swing, but of course it swings quite well, and there are lots of opportunities for ornaments and variations. Glad you like it. :o)

I really was preparing a 'classic' Italian, red, white and green (fresh basil), when I caught this addition, just what the doctor ordered...and much preferred to valium... Now my lips and tongue are buzzing with the white balsamic ~ love the stuff, could drink it straight... ;-)

Mmmmmm...balsamic vinegar. Just back from a party where the food table featured fresh baked herb bread and bowls of white balsamic vinegar and high end olive oil from Greece. Oopah!

Ruth Thatcher? No relation, I hope.

I hadn't actually looked at the tune yet when I wrote the above comment. It's another Harmon classic. Lovely tune, Will. What's behind the title?

Story!?

Hey lad, if you want sublime intoxication from an oil and vinegar combination, and great for dipping homebaked breads ~ the oil of choice is hazelnut, and with a 'good' balsamic ~ it is H-E-A-V-E-N!!! If you manage to give it a try, do write and make me envious... Though I think I'm going to chase up some hazelnut oil for this Christmas, along with a large bottle of Moskovskaja...so if you're in the neighbourhood ~ ... ;-)

Don't mind spoon, I think his medication has gone squiff again... He's moving you know ~ i Gymru / to Wales...

Oh yeah, gooooood Greek olive oil ~ Hopa! Hopa! HEY!!!

# Posted on November 12th 2006 by ceolachan

Spoon, the title just sort of came with the tune. Something in the melody minded me of the ins and outs of thatching.

I'll give the hazelnut a go sometime soon. I've also enjoyed almond oil as a dip.

Sorry, I keep wanting to call this "The Roof Thatcher's Daughter" ~ but I will resist... :-)

But, if I finish any lyrics to my liking I'll add them...

# Posted on November 12th 2006 by ceolachan

I'm also fond of walnut oil and because of its low water content use it on wood... ;-)

Sweet tune Will. I'll play it with you at the session.

I think you should rename it "Vinegar and Oil." :)

The Roof Thatcher's Daughter

The more I thunk on it, the more I liked C's suggested name. So it is.
