Whinshields Hornpipe
This is a Northumbrian one from "Northumbrian Pipers' Tunebook", and composed by J. L. Dunk. It's down as a 2/4; though it has a few rather idiosyncratic dotted notes, I've never heard it played as anything but a two-four reel or rant, so why it was named as a hornpipe I don't know. No reason though why it couldn't be tweaked up into a 4/4 hornpipe if desired.
Each part is down in the book as being played once only, though obviously each can be played twice if so wished, or needed in a dance set. It's a fairly easy, quite catchy tune.
(When I find an Irish tune that isn't already in the database, I'll put it in..!)

Whinshields Hornpipe
Yes, this isn't really a hornpipe - more of a 2/4 march. I think Whinshields is the name of a place ("shields" as in North/South Shields comes from Middle English "schele" meaning "temporary sheds or huts used by fishermen") so you were probably right to omit the apostrophe which you often see in publications. I've transcribed it from the playing of George Hepple, who repeated the B-part. Probably doesn't need repeating tho'.

That DG in the 12th full bar of the A-part should be high - dg. Shouldn't have been lazy and used cut & paste to save myself time!
