Never heard this tune come up in a session, but I play it with a ceili/barndance bance for the Cumberland Square Eight.
It does crop up, however, with its parts reversed and slightly modified, in the Sliabh Luachra repertoire, as this slide:

'bance' should read 'band'.

Probably doen't come up at an Irish session because it likely is considered to be one of those 'dag' tunes that many mention. I've always considered it as Scottish / English and was one one the first tunes that I learnt when I started getting into trad dance music. It was one of the standards played almost 35 yrs ago. Certainly played by English bands in the S of Eng.

"Major Mackie's Jig" ~ Jimmy Shand, Kerr, the Canadian Maritimes
This great ol' tune was popular in a lot of places, including New England, for contra dance (and occurs in several collections, including Ralph Sweet's excellent collection "Fifer's Delight"), and all over Canada (& played by Don Messer and also including in one of his published collections) including the Maritimes ~ and that includes Cape Breton and Prince Edward Island. I also occurs as a jig in Kerr's Merry Melodies, volume 4... Yeah, a great dance tune, so much so that it is also in several forms used for sets/quadrilles/squares and other sorts of dancing all over God's creation, including Sliabh Luachra. You can't keep a good tune down...

'I' don't occur as a jig, 'it' does... Or do I? Come to think of it ~
