Hanter Dro ~ Same A, a different B

Related? ~ at least from the start. I've played both of these Hanter Dros at one point or another. I like the dance and have collected tunes over time and this is another one. Yes, it has the same A-part as the tune given earlier, #6254 linked to above, but a very different B-part. I like them both... I didn't say I'd make it easy for you... ;-)

Curious this one, and it may not survive, my notes are that I learned it from a Breton group, but obviously they had slammed the set together, playing the A-part from the one tune and the B-part from the other... I'll add this to the comments of the one tune as a note and let Jeremy send this into digital limbo...

NO ~ AXE THAT LAST COMMENT!!! ~ oops, sorry for the yelling

Sorry gang, I've been playing too many hanter dros this evening. Yes, the version given here does have the same A-part, but not the same B-part as the second tune, but curiously I've go that second tune in amongst the same notes I have for this one, along with a number of others.

I've also been playing through an old manuscript too... Anyway, this tune's B-part is distinct enough that hopefully it wil lsurvive on its own. If anyone else is familiar with this, give me solace in adding some comment here... It is going on 2 a.m. and I need to pack things away and go for a long hot soak...which means I'll probably pass out in the tub and wake up pickled and cold... Now, I wonder if there's any whiskey left in the house? ;-)

And yes swisspiper, I've more for you, and not just hanter dro, but I'll hold out for a spell as I think I need to add more Irish beforehand, three hanter dros in a row may be pushing my luck? :-/

Some Hanter Dros with singing and the words for the songs ~ nicely done and a generous and appreciated contribution to the Internet and Breton dance...

Curious & Curiouser ~

I had that soak but followed by a restless night. I did some more searching and have found several hanter dros that are very close to each other and these two, all using basically this first part, the A-part, or some version of it, followed by a different B-part, though there were similarities between a few of these too.

One way or another, and hopefully I can chase up more information on them, I'll be back with these and some 'content'. I don't have the 'old' collections with me, but I believe one of these was in a large Breton collection that was made in the 1800s... I'll see if I can chase up someone with a copy on hand, or maybe one of you have it. There were a few early collections of Breton dance tunes, for example the Mahé manuscript, which was reprinted in the '90s but has very few if any hanter dros (treble tunes variously transcribed as 3/2, 3/4, 6/4, 6/8, and even as 'mixed meter ~ 4/4-2/4, etc...)

The results of all this steppin' and dawdlin' around the place has had other results, soon also to follow... The dance like the tunes are beautifully minimalistic and mesmerizing...very 'community', and adding to the reasons why I love the 'socialism' of them...Fest Nos!!!

Scots band "Pipedown" recorded this tune on their album. They play a Bulgarian tune after it.

Proof of madness & the all night hanter dros ~

A-Part: Alternate ways and keys, this melody occurs in all sorts of ways, sometimes just 4 measures, without the repeat, sometimes the first 2 measures with a repeat (=4), & sometimes the 3rd part for some 4-parters, and even as part of a hanter-dro/an-dro... The Bombarde & Biniou-koz is a bit like penny whistles, there are a choice of keys and some folks prefer them high while others like them low, so recordings and transcriptions can be in a number of different keys for the same melody, as shown here. Any of the variations given in one key can be transposed to another key, as given, in this case just takes on the A-part, the B less varied and to follow:
