Here's a tune I wrote twenty years ago, when my son was a frolicsome little lad. I've only played it on guitar, so I don't know if it translates well onto anything else. I labeled it as a hornpipe, but I play it at a moderate reel tempo with an "American" swing.

How come?

Why do some hornpipes on this site play back through the MIDI output with a swing and others don't?

Because Dow and "c" insist on adding all these useless ">" dinxters in the ABCs.

No I don't

Hey Button, don't you think you are being just a little insensitive there?

After all, they ( the useless ">" dinxters ) might be listening! :-)

...... & anyway, I'm a big fan!

Course, the truth is, I can't write ABC to save myself, but sure, somebody's gotta love them, ........................... haven't they?

Still confused...

If I MIDI-play Boys of Bluehill, it comes out swinging, yet I don’t see any “>” or “<”. The ABC for this tune doesn’t look any different (except for the notes), but it comes out straight. I haven’t done a lot of ABCing, so I could easily do something stoopid.

Good question Bob, Jeremy, as I understood it, had originally set the software so the midi for a 'hornpipe' would swing. One of the problems though was that when you sometimes notated it with the 'arrows', the swing was way overboard, the software not seeming to be able to compensate or allow for a more usual swing, such as 2-to-1 instead of 3-to-1. It may be he eventually changed it so the midis would all come out straight, so it may be a question of before and after, so 'hornpipes' before the change will reflect the old way of converting the midi to swing, and those afterwards, more recent ~ would be straight unless notated with the 'arrows'?
