"Kit O'Mahoney's Hornpipe" ~ courtesy of Tim, alias 'tmcelrea'

You should have figured that one out right away, the 'arrows' are missing. If it were me posting this I'd have used the >>>>'s, as is my way and want. But, with respect to the contributor on who's part I'm acting, I have left it arrow free. I'll add my own take to it in the comments later. Further, in respect of the person on who's part I'm acting their comment and some links will follow... :-)

Patrick taught me his hornpipe setting of this tune a few years back. I've listed it in the comments of the album 'Tracin', recorded with Gearóid Ó HAllmhuráin:

Track 14: Kit O'Mahoney's / Fahy's Delight

On the album it is played down a whole step. He was playing a fiddle tuned down to FCGD.

It is aslo tune #1593 in O'Neill's 1850.
I am told that Kit O'Mahoney is Francis O'Neill's mother.

I like this hornpipe, but the jig's one of my favourite tunes. Cheers for the submission anyways, I've been meaning to learn the hornpipe version properly for a while but haven't got round to it yet. :)

ceolachan,

I admire (and appreciate) your restraint in not adding the >>>>s. All those dots give me a headache. I generally just assume that all hornpipes should sound like 'doo-key doo-key doo-key doo-key doo-key'. ;-)

Ah, I see. I suppose I'm just not that edgy (Touchy, perhaps, but edgy? No.)

Kit O'Mahoney's - Another Option

I've always known Kit O'Mahoney's as a hornpipe but here it's played as a jig and in the key of "C" rather than "G". It's on the Comhaltas site over at http://comhaltas.ie/music/detail/comhaltaslive_229_2_bronwyn_de_paor/ and is also another example of the great music being played by today's younger musicians.

Kit O'Mahoney's - Version from Edel Fox

Here's a transcription of the version Edel Fox played on the Clare FM Kitchen Sessions in November 2007. I ran out of patience trying to work out the cuts in the B part and couldn't figure out the chords she used (her concertina has a few more buttons than mine and perhaps a different layout on the 3rd row). There are also some variations the 2nd time through (eg. substituting a high a in place of the f/f/ in the 7th bar of the A part.

Kit O'Mahoney's Hornpipe

The version given here is a little different from the "original" as published by O'Neill (no. 838 in DMoI). I say original because Kit O'Mahoney was O'Neill's mother!

The version in O'Neill tune makes the tune's ultimate identity with the "minor" (i.e. Dorian) English Hornpipe called the Sportsman's (or Oldham) Hornpipe even clearer.
