Beeswing

This is the Northumbrian Rant that I have put with "Bob Thompson's" (know by me as "Catterthun") This is quite defferent to the tune also known as Beeswing which can be found in the Sesson data base. Any further info. would be appreciated.

Beeswing

This Beeswing is attributed to Robert Lightfoot in the Charleton Memorial Book (page2) Catterthun can also be found there ( page 35)

Beeswing

Just had a thought I wonder if it is named for the famous racehorse "Beeswing" as is James Hill's Beeswing. Apparently Beeswing won the Newcastle Plate several times.

Thanks for that reminder 'alexb' , I'm inclined to agree with your idea for the origin of the tune, makes sense.

Beeswing

The A-part reminds me of the Scottish reel "I'll Gaen Nae Mair Tae Yon Toun", of which "Lucky In Love" http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/1625 is the Irish version. Not quite sure what exactly makes this a rant though. On paper it looks like a fling to me, like Bob Thompson's.

BTW thanks very much for posting the tune. I wasn't even aware there was another tune called the Beeswing. This is much less well-known than James Hill's hornpipe of that name.

I've always considered both Catterthun & Beeswing as rants, possibly because of associating rants with Nothumberland and you can rant to your hearts delight to these two. I've always associated a fling with Scotland and to 6/8 rhythm, (perhaps because I played a Scottish jig at a festival once for a couple of people doing a fling as a demo dance). Interesting to see the connection with 'Lucky In Love' I will have to look out for the Scottish tune now.

Beeswing

Forgive my lack of knowledge on rants and flings, but show this tune be played with cuts and holds as a hornpipe?
Thanks

The first part does sound like 'I'll Gang Nae Mair Tae Yon Toon"
