Details ABC Sheetmusic Comments

This is a tune (unlikely related to the jig already here with the same name) that is played by basically everyone in the Baltimore/DC area. It's always played after "Jack Riordan's" (http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display.php/5175), posted here the other day. You can hear this tune played by Billy McComiskey, Brendan Mulvihill, and Zan McLeod at http://www.kennedy-center.org/programs/millenium. Search the archives for the concert they did on December 26, 2003. It's the second tune they play during the first set, and while Billy doesn't know the name and attributes it to Johnny McGreevey in Chicago, I'm confident that the name of the tune is as I've listed it.

I officially learned this tune from a certain fluter friend who used to frequent this site, but is currently busy flitting around in a mansion somewhere. *Coughemily* ;-) . Thus why it might sound a bit flutey, but I think it's a good tune on any instrument.

I just listened again to the Kennedy Center video, so here's a transcription directly from that. Very close to what Jason posted, except the box and fiddle do triplets on all those long As in the A part, and then just a slight tweak of notes in measures 1, 3, and 5 of the B part. As follies:

As far as I can tell, this is just the C and B parts of Boil The Breakfast Early http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display.php/3. I doubt you'd get away with playing this in our session w/o people launching into that much more common tune...

Very similar, and I agree that everyone else might veer into BTBE if you started this, but they're different enough in my mind. My guess is kissing cousins--two tunes derived from the same musical DNA, but diverging as they travel.

Being the staple that it is around here, I doubt there would be many people confusing the tunes, although I could see why they might. Fortunately for me, I haven't gotten around to learning BTBE yet.

There´s a reel in L.E. McCullough's book called - as far as I can recall -"Owen Davey´s". That tune is also known as "Money in Both Pockets".

Well done Jason. Was just trolling through my old recorded tunes looking to brush up a few for the Catskills, & found this recorded from last summer & then checked here under Riordan's to see if it had been posted. I got this from Eliot (Grasso, on flute), & on my recording he calls it Riordan's from Brendan Mulvihill, but ... well, I think you're right. Now I guess I'll go learn Riordan's to play before it.

PS I'm really going to miss you this year, Jason.

Hey, I don't mean to be snippy, but in Baltimore we actually play the third bar in the second part "dcdg edc(natural)A"

It makes a big C major. It's hard to hear in the recordings, but you'll definitely hear it if the guy sitting next to you is playing the F-sharp and the C-sharp instead.
