This is a tune (unlikely related to the jig already here with the same name) that is played by basically everyone in the Baltimore/DC area. It's always played after "Jack Riordan's" (http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display.php/5175), posted here the other day. You can hear this tune played by Billy McComiskey, Brendan Mulvihill, and Zan McLeod at http://www.kennedy-center.org/programs/millenium. Search the archives for the concert they did on December 26, 2003. It's the second tune they play during the first set, and while Billy doesn't know the name and attributes it to Johnny McGreevey in Chicago, I'm confident that the name of the tune is as I've listed it.

I officially learned this tune from a certain fluter friend who used to frequent this site, but is currently busy flitting around in a mansion somewhere. *Coughemily* ;-). Thus why it might sound a bit flutey, but I think it's a good tune on any instrument.

Anywho, enjoy.

Money in Both Pockets

I just listened again to the Kennedy Center video, so here's a transcription directly from that. Very close to what Jason posted, except the box and fiddle do triplets on all those long As in the A part, and then just a slight tweak of notes in measures 1, 3, and 5 of the B part. As follies:

T: Money In Both Pockets
M: 4/4
L: 1/8
S: Brendan Mulvihill and Billy McComiskey, with Zan McLeod, in concert at the Kennedy Center, Millenium Stage, December 26, 2003.

As far as I can tell, this is just the C and B parts of Boil The Breakfast Early http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display.php/3. I doubt you'd get away with playing this in our session w/o people launching into that much more common tune...

Very similar, and I agree that everyone else might veer into BTBE if you started this, but they're different enough in my mind. My guess is kissing cousins--two tunes derived from the same musical DNA, but diverging as they travel.

Being the staple that it is around here, I doubt there would be many people confusing the tunes, although I could see why they might. Fortunately for me, I haven't gotten around to learning BTBE yet.

Money in Both Pockets

There´s a reel in L.E. McCullough's book called - as far as I can recall -"Owen Davey´s". That tune is also known as "Money in Both Pockets".

The tune I know as Money in Both Pockets

Have just made my ABC debut with this tune. There may be a couple of mistakes here and there...but I hope it´s playable. It´s online as The Other Money in Both Pockets

# Posted on November 16th 2005 by Tim@Copenhagen

Not online as the Other Money in Both Pockets !

Sorry..the"other" Money in Both Pockets is here!
Here´s the tune I´m talking about. I´ve included some of the slight variations that I might play. I probably use a few more C naturals. I learnt it from a 1984 or 1985 recording of a session from Quealey´s Bar.

See Ni Fios

The tune listed in this forum as Ni Fios is the same as the ABC of Money in Both Pockets entered above....just a slightly different setting.

Hee hee

Well done Jason. Was just trolling through my old recorded tunes looking to brush up a few for the Catskills, & found this recorded from last summer & then checked here under Riordan's to see if it had been posted. I got this from Eliot (Grasso, on flute), & on my recording he calls it Riordan's from Brendan Mulvihill, but ... well, I think you're right. Now I guess I'll go learn Riordan's to play before it. :)

PS I'm really going to miss you this year, Jason.

Transcription

Hey, I don't mean to be snippy, but in Baltimore we actually play the third bar in the second part "dcdg edc(natural)A"

It makes a big C major. It's hard to hear in the recordings, but you'll definitely hear it if the guy sitting next to you is playing the F-sharp and the C-sharp instead.

Snippy? :-/ Here's your bar in the context of the original transcription...

Geez PB. Sorry I didn't learn from the composer himself. I bow to you ol' humble Annapolis-ian. Hee hee. Fair enough about the C Natural. Interesting to know. More interesting is that you've been around this site almost as long as me. Had no idea.

# Posted on May 14th 2007 by Jason G

Dang, messed up my own slag. Forgot Billy wasn't the composer, but merely the muso playing it in the video and the person who I most associate the tune with. You know what I meant though PB.
