The Turfahun Barndance

I was given this 'Slide', written out in tonic sol-fa, by John Moulden, who found it amongst Sam Henry's papers. Although it is called a Barndance, it is most definitely in either a slow 6/8 or 12/8.

I wonder, do you get 6/8 Barndances or are they all 4/4?

Anyway, 'Turfahun' is a townland just outside Bushmills, Co Antrim, near the Giant's Causeway & Bushmills Distillery, and in years gone by there were a number of fiddlers in that area, who may have been responsible for writing this, or just adapting it from another tune they had heard.

For more information on this tune's history, you could contact John Moulden at: http://members.aol.com/moul81075/ulstsong.htm

For more info on fiddlers of that area, you could check out: http://www.causewaymusic.co.uk/cdff.html

In the first half of the tune the c is 'Natural', but in the 2nd half it is 'Sharp', so, I knew it wasn't G Major, but, as my music writing skills are very limited, & I have not yet managed to get my head round modes, I had to have a guess at this one! - SORRY!

Perhaps Jeremy might find a moment to repair any damage!

Sorry, not a b, but a B.

Sorry guys, I have been back to the ABC since the sheetmusic was posted, & I was able to see my mistakes.

I've since fine tuned the ABC, including the B at the end of the first bar, which was not a b at all.

Tell me again about that expression which tells of old dogs & new tricks?
