The first part of this tune involves arpeggios of D and Eminor chords.

Playing the Eminor phrase might be a bit tricky at first but it's worth perfecting it because this little phrase crops up in a lot reels. If you're playing it on the fiddle, try holding down the E and the B with one finger or at least keep E and B held down for the duration of the phrase, even when you're playing the D note.

re jackie colemans reel

i am a grandaughter of jackie coleman RIP he died in december of 2001 unfortunately there is no recent recording of the reel and the original is the one played by seamus tansey also from gurteen. grandad could never actually write down his music he always did it by air and thats why he gave it to seamus tansey to record there is only a few amateur tapes hanging around of grandad playing it but you would get more information in the coleman memorial center in gurteen co. sligo.

Wow, cool, Mary, any chance of those tapes getting put onto cds? Is there a website for the memorial center?

Jackie Coleman’s banjo fingering

Hello.
I have been practicing this tune on my tenor banjo, but I find it difficult to finger the |g2gf gbag|faeg fdd2:| of the B part.
I know there are some phrases which can not be played easily by some instruments while it is not so by the other instruments, but I would like to ask you what you do when you encounter this kind of phrases., especially for tenor banjo as the position change doesn’t seem to be helpful on this instrument.
By the way, what I have been doing for the above phrase is to modify the phrase to |g2 (3ggg gbag|faeg fdd2| putting my index finger to play “g” of the first bar, and slide the finger down to “f” for the phrasing of the second bar.

This is the Jackie Colemans on "Music at Matt Molloy's". This is nice in a set followed by the mountain road.

Jackie Coleman Set

John Carty plays this reel on banjo on his "The Cat that Ate the Candle" CD with Brian McGrath on piano. The other reel in the set is the one Hammy Hamilton recorded with another fluter Paul McGrattan as "Over the Bog Road": http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/2026 Not sure if that's also another tune penned by J. Coleman.

Re: jackie Coleman's Reel Chords

I would probably play something like this:

A part:
D | D | Em | A | D | D | Em | A D

B part:
D | D | A | A | D | D | G | A D

There may be some interesting places to throw some G's and maybe some Bm or F#m chords, which I would do extemporaneously and intermittently, depending on how much I have been drinking.

Re: jackie Coleman's Reel Chords

Here's a link to our humble little site with lots of tunes. I think they all have chords:
home.comcast.net/~saustin98/lark

Jackie Coleman's is on there. They're very much like Crazy_Fingers. And he's right. Those are just basic chords to get you through. Experiment and have fun!

Re: jackie Coleman's Reel Chords

Great stuff steve. I approve, from a cursory look the chords seem accurate and simple, a great resource.
I dont think its spooky at all, A tune has a chord pattern within the melody. Its that simple.

Jackie Coleman's reel's strangeness

I don't know why this tune looks strange to me... I'm probably wrong but... wouldn't it make more sense like this?
