Grant's Reel

Found this one on Natalie MacMaster's CD. I was able to transcribe it, but I think it will be a while before I actually learn how to play it!

It's also on Sharon Shannon's "The Diamond Mountain Sessions." On the last track Kane Sisters, Mary & Sharon Shannon, Jesse Smith, and Sean Smyth all play this tune together on the fiddle, backed by Donogh Hennessy.

Widely played in D.

Sandy Macintyre the geat compiler of Cape Breton tunes calls The Grants' a hornpipe.

I suppose there could be different songs all called "Grant's," but I just checked Natalie's website, and it definitely lists it as a reel. I don't know if this is the same tune for the other recordings, but this is how it sounds on Natalie's CD, and it does sound like a reel. But that's the beauty of these tunes--they allow for a lot of flexibility.

Use *tune*, not song! I used to play it years back as a reel myself. An awful lot of these tunes are flexible.

Tommy Doucet plays this on both of his LPs (which have a lot of duplication), on I Used To Play Some Pretty Tough Tunes it's Joanne's Reel, on Down East Star it's Irish Reel. Good to find the score.

I first heard this on a pub recording of Sean McGuire, he does a crazy slide up to the third octave E at the end of the first part.

There's a President Grant's Hornpipe in Ryan's but it isn't this tune.
