I saw this requested by ariesfiddler.
I've only heard John Carty's recording of this, and, as is fairly common on his playing on simple tunes, it's hard to tell what's the tune and what's variation ;o) However, I've heard it played in sessions a couple of times, and I think this transcription has always been at the base of people's versions. It's one of those tunes that everyone plays differently!

This is a Paddy O'Brien tune. I'll maybe post his version in a separate entry, as it's in D and Carty has individualised it a good bit.
On second thoughts, it's in the book of O'Brien tunes. So perhaps you can find it there.

This is a great pub on the Shannon River - Lough Derg. Nothing useful to add about the tune itself

The Barge Inn
The setting I hear most often in sessions is slightly different to the one in the book in that it has F nats and C nats in that first 2-bar phrase, so worth posting I think. This mostly mixolydian setting is like a halfway house between John Carty's dorian version and the major one in the book. Not sure what recording the mixo setting comes from. Can anyone shed light on this?
This tune really is a work of art. I love its twists and turns.

I beg your pardon, I should qualify that by saying that the lack of any kind of B in John Carty's version means that you can't really say it's definitely dorian, but at any rate, the ambiguity of its gapped scale lends itself to that interpretation. I must say I prefer the version I've given. Carty's setting misses all those lovely ups and downs in the B-part.
