One of the kid's got this nice simple wee tune at the Willie Clancy last week. Being wary of Dow!!!, I've searched ABC's and googled galore but can't seem to come up with it. Probably well known, perhaps in different key or variation on melody. Any ideas?

Sounds like a slide I have heard with the remarkable title "The Hair Fell off my Coconut". I don't play it myself and I don't see it listed here, at least not under that title.

Isn't there a slide called "Kings of Kerry" written by what's-his-name from "The Waterboys"? Is this it? Just to be sure we acknowledge authorship.

I'll ask him. Hopefully I'll hear back. I'll chase it up anyway as if it is it should be credited and he should be asked. If he's a different tune by this name I'll ask if we can post that, with full credits. It seems strange, the shared title, but the term has been applied to several musicians from Kerry. I think the first source listed predates their album "Room to Roam", 1990, which has the tune by that name on it. Unfortunately I haven't the album. Wish me luck... I won't post the 'A' version until I know for sure. The sources I have for the tune do not credit it to anyone... Also, but maybe that's just the sign of a good composition, that it 'fits' naturally, I'm sure I've known this melody for sometime myself, or something very much like this... It comes naturally...sweet and simple...

I got the 'answer', two-fold, I had it with two names in the first collection above, where it also has the title "Mike Scott's Slide", and I just heard back from them as well with the OK that it is on site here. The credit is as given and as described, three fold... I love it, smiling a wide grin, it is such a sweet and open tune and just feels right. Now I have 'approval' I'll return with the other key...

A jig written by myself, Sharon and Steve backstage at a rock festival and named in tribute to Cooney and Begley, veritably the "Kings" of Kerry (and Irish) music. To my delight Colin played backwards mandolin on this. He worked out the musical notation of the tune, then wrote it the wrong way round and played along with the tape of the recording turned backwards. When we turned the tape round the right way again there it was - a psychedelic backwards jig.
The "lilters" on the track are myself, Steve and Sharon. Colin plays the "cock crowing" sound effects on a gadget he had."

LOL I've got a sort of funny story about that. Well maybe Jeremy won't find it funny, but anyway, my mum's a little bit naive when it comes to swearwords, and I think my mum and dad were out one night at some do, and my mum went "oh yeah that man's such a tw*t", and my mum gets all embarrassed even at what by today's standards are quite innocent-sounding words. Eh!!, I'm kinda confused. Is this an old tune listed in the tune books above or a Mike Scott composition? Anyway whatever, it kinda sticks in the head easily enough, best with cuts to separate the b's and g's etc.

They all three pulled this one out of the hat, and good on 'em. It has always felt old and familiar to me, but probably also because it shares elements with other tunes in the chain of things. The story is above as are the two names it has been known by ~ "Kings" & "Mike Scott's"... But as I've been informed from the source, and directed ~ three people were involved in the process of weaving this tune:
