Not sure, but this tune sounds like a version of "The Soundmount": http://thesession.org/tunes/display.php/176

Molloy & co

This tune was recorded by Matt Molloy on the "Fire Aflame" Cd with Sean Keane & Liam O'Flynn. It's a variant of "Sailing into Walpole's Marsh".

Wrong key

I posted the tune with a wrong key. It is in Ador, not E dor.
Sorry for that. The F only is sharp.

You're right, Kenny. Maeve Donnelly and Peadar O'Loughlin recently recorded this tune as "Sailing into Walpole's Marsh." In the sleeve notes of "The Thing Itself," Pat Mitchell writes this version can be traced back to a single source, Gerry-Terry McMahon, a flute player from Kilnaboy, Co. Clare. Cian's members are also from Clare. I haven't got their second album, but I can almost hear Padraig playing this tune on concertina.

"Sailing into Walpole Marsh" seems to me a distinct & different tune.

The first part is clearly related to Walpole's (and Castle Kelly's), but the second part bears little relation. You could call it a variant of Walpole's, in the same way as you could call a clementine a kind of orange. But it's a disting tune to my ear.

...That should have been 'distinct'.

I'm with gian marco here - the similarity is only superficial - the shape of the seond part is totally different, and it's missing the distinctive shift from A to G in the first part. So I don't think that SITWM should be here as an alternative title...

I agree. Only the first half of the first part is the same, the rest is entirely different.
However, it could be that the original"composer" simply forgot how to play the tune for whatever reason and made up the rest or approximated as best they could; I'm sure many tunes have come into existence that way.

It is a different tune. But that does not preclude it having 'Sailing into Walpole's Marsh' as an alternative title, even if it's 'wrong'.
