A Visit to Ireland

A fluter friend of mine has been lobbying me to learn this, so I sat down and worked out a couple of settings to start from. This jig is in O'Neill's, but isn't in some of the bigger online collections so it seemed worthwhile to post it here.

It's not in the recordings links, but there is a nice version of this jig by Frank O'Higgins that's on one of the Topic fiddle anthologies.

I've been told that this tune used to be much more frequently played than it is today.

I have to correct myself. I was thinking that the O'Higgins recording was on Past Masters of Irish Fiddle Music, but it's not.

I only have it on tape. Perhaps someone has put it out.

"A-The Visit To Ireland" ~ 70 beats per minute

~ and sometimes played very slooowwly as and for a 'treble jig'... Not that other jigs can't also be given that treatment if a step dancer requests it and the musician is willing... ;-)

A Hard Jig!

"Treble Jig" often referred to as a "Hard jig" by many dancers causes no end of confusion for a musician who may think he's being asked to play something really difficult rather than just slowing down the tempo for the "hard shoe" dance!

Yes, and not always something a session-spoiled musician is capable of controlling ~ but a lot of fun to do...especially if the dancer is gifted and they aren't using those damned fiberglass shoes... :-P ~ ;-)

Actually come to think of it, a hard tune is part of the answer as it's going to be that much more difficult to play it fast! We usually use the Banks of Lough Gowna in "C" where it slows one up getting the F naturals which don't come up much in tunes played at sessions.

That's perfect, a really sweet tune too...
